the freshwater scene has been lack luster lately. the mulley and murrel have been off the bite and the only thing of note has been pearl spots which are fun on light tackle but ....
so i decided to get more in the salt water and see if i could rustle something up and went to the port yesterday evening and today morning. i tried all lures i had near a collapsed pier and the only one which had a hit was a storm swim shad. the hit which felt more like a yank from some thing big left the swim shad in tatters. after 3 hrs of casting and nothing we went back downcast but determined to get something in the morning. the morning was overcast and i rigged two set ups one for live bait with prawns and the other with lures. tried all lures and did not get any strike till i remembered that i had a yo zuri crank bait sitting in its pack. tied it on and wham ! a strike on the third cast. the wildcat rod made short work of its runs and the fish was landed. the way they fight is awesome and that when it was a 2 pounder ! hats off to u guys landing bigger fish.
i got one more fish but that was dropped by my man friday. so that's a total of two mjs.not bad , now that i know that they are here i shall get some more next week.
tackle used
wildcat 8ft rod
penn silverado 4000
tufline xp 20 lb
lure yo zuri crank 3d

light tackle ! he he . that is as light as i dare go(newb) . i was trying out yesterday with a crossfire rod but was told by my fishing guru that the rod is not upto mj tackling esp if i hook into a big un.
that said i am a bit afraid of loosing lures and was expecting bigger fish (grouper's) hence i was using this tackle. probably as i get more experience i shall be able to tailor the tackle to the fish. at present i have two rod reel combos
1) daiwa beefstick with hyperloop 6000 , 30 lb braid
2) daiwa crossfire with penn sliverado 4000, 20 lb braid
the wildcat rod is from my angling club.
am planning an ugly stick salmon /steel head rod next.

Good Catch ACE,,,,MJ's are good table fish too.

What you made out of this MJ, I mean FRY or CURRY.

Give some tips about your style of cooking the fish.

got two more . the lure used was a halco poltergeist in red tiger color.
one hit by a stripling mj and another strike by a trevally. no pics of the trevally as it was late in the evening. the mj was caught this morning.
i am also posting pics of what the local handliners catch.

i was also told by a local that the season for gt (yes they are here ) :D :D and barra is about to start. so i believe i should be able to break out of the 2 pounder bracket and get a big one.

Ace-doc,

Lovely picture of the MJ...so the Poltergeist has outperformed the soft plastic!!

Good fishing,

Ace-doc, tell me how far you could cast poltergeis lure? was it 50 or 80?

I bought Golden Green 80 and yet to try. What was the line? mono or braid?

Good to see many new lures are used?

Try popping to lure up GT's and Big Ones love to take on the Popping Lure..

Good Luck

i did not try a soft lure so no comparison.
i used the poltergeist 80 as salties are not size shy. i have had 1 pound trevally strike on to a hydro popper 11 cm. i can cast the p 80 around 30 mts. i have switched to braid totally and was using the set up i mentioned in the beginning of the post (20 lb tufline). i had a clam snag my leader and it was the funniest thing seeing my lure surface while the line was firmly stuck. a local helped me by breaking the line and retrieving the lure.

finally i am getting there ! got a appx 2kg mj today. it was low tide and i was using a troll craft lure by pioneer. on my third cast between the collapsed pier pilings i got this (small by IA but big by my standards) mj. the strike was brutal and and the fight was exhilarating with two short runs and several strong tugs by the fish. i thought that i was onto something much bigger as the drag was pretty much closed. even after 3 minutes i was yet to see the fish and when it surfaced in a flash of red i got a shock. it is the largest mj i have caught and i hope to better the size in the next two days. pics later to night.
