Finally back home after three months at work(marine engineer).Had a unscheduled stop at sea as we were reaching port early and had to kill time.we were drifting somwhere north of California on our way to Japan,I had just picked up some tackle in the last port.
The crew knew of my obsession for fishing and i got a report that there were some fish around the vessel.Left the engine room and came up to have a look and here about 2000 miles from land were some dorado!!.
Grabbed the New Ugly stick tiger rod tied on a a jigging lure, which i had picked up with no idea of what i was going to do with it!!.Anyway belted out a cast from the main deck.the vessel is a car carrier and the main deck is about 25 metres above the water line.not really sure of what would happen.Started the retrieve and few seconds later there was a fish on the line. Before i could react and strike he had jumped out of the water and thrown the hook.Second cast hooked up again and this time well hooked.unfortunately still had not worked out how to land this fish.tried to handline it up the side but in all the excitement it got off.Guess it was still green and had a lot of strength in it.
Decided to try from a little lower down .Went to the forward anchor station which is about 15 metre above water level and got some items organised.Third cast-no luck.Fourth cast -Hook up.This time allowed the fish to run on a light drag and got some of the crew organised.Really acrobatic fight on a light drag.getting the fish on board was a three man operation involing ropes,a packing crate and lots of missed heartbeats-tookhalf an hour. The second picture is of the same fish which had a dramtic change of colour after a few minutes of being out of the water. The phillpino crew were happy to see the fish on board and were wondering why we wasted time taking photographs before taking the fish straight to the kitchen where it was turned into tom yum soup, fried fish and fish curry which was dinner for 14 hungry sailors.
