Since WASI gets mentioned quite often, some of you may be wondering what the stretch is like.

Yes MM, give them another 5 years of protection and we should have some big Masheer. Some of the guy's might not find the terrain challenging enough though.
You know what, i would love to fish the stretch below the falls, and upto Bheemeshwari. Anyone explored that bit yet ? It looks awesome from the power generation unit. Will try to get some pix from the fall this time.

Hi Owen,

I've been under the impression that that bit of the river was like Beirut. Dyanmitted and bombed by the poachers from handpost. Its more like noman's land there. I don't think JLR or Forest Dept. do anything there. I know the river is heavily poached up stream from D'makali.
Any one been there? I know Ravi has but he's not on the forum and is difficult to reach these days.

I know that it comes under WASI waters now, and the fishing rates are even advertised on the WASI website for that stretch. Will try and get some pix from the top. Truly awesome sight and looks like perfect Masheer water. Pity about the poaching. Stretches like this really need govt and ngo's help to stop what's been happening.

Hi MM / Rustam,
I don't think Doddamakli is too far down stream from Shivasamundram, and there was a pretty big fish landed there (was it Ravi's picture at Golghar in Galibori with that beauty) ??
The view of the river from the top of the power generation unit had me stunned when i saw it in December. It looks totally wild and full of bends and rapids. Maybe looking down from the falls does not give you the same panoramic view as from the power unit, will check that out this time, if the fishing doesnt pan out.
Yes Rustam, Bobbee Kapoor and self are booked in for this weekend at WASI lakes, but i won't guarentee any pix from the top, as camera use is strictly a no no from there. God knows i don't look like a anti-social elements, but then rules are rules mate !

The first time I went to Doddamakali I went from the Handpost side, which is the opposite side from the present JLR camp. There's a road called the KPTCL road which leads to the river, which was built when they planned to dam the river at D'makali. Thank God that plan has been shelved.
It is a beautiful drive from the other side and views of the river are spectacular. Makes one feel like they're the first person to discover that spot. The murral fishing was really good and we also landed some mahseer. I wasn't carrying heavy tackle so never really gave it a shot on my first trip.
While out fishing for murral I came across several nightlines that I cut and removed. Also heard some dynamite from further upstream past the rapid. We met a couple of villagers who told us there were alot of people coming from 'Mangla' to poach in that area. The funny part is that there's another 'Mangla' village opposite Haira, so am not sure if its the same village.

i came across this link while looking for a picture of a Wallago Attu (Fresh water shark), well gues what, i found a whole lot more, courtesy Johnny Jensen who was a regular on the Kaveri during the old days of WASI running the Kaveri river stretch. Anyone seen him recently ?
There are pix of a whole variety of fish taken from the Kaveri by Johnny and friends including a pig nose carp, a kurrel (barbel looking fish) and a great big wallago attu,besides some delicate looking species.

Johnny Jensen's site and his photos are one of my favoirites. I stumbled across his site a few years ago and was amazed by his work. I wonder if he still comes here to fish? Poor chap will be in for a rude shock

HI,

There is an error in the map. Doddamakli is upstream of the confluence of Simsa with Cauvery, not downstream of it.
I have trekked from Bheemeshwari to Doddamakli 8 km and had to cross Simsa before reaching Doddamakli.
