Hi mates,

I would appriciate if you can clarify some of my doubts.

1) can we tie a braided line directly to the lure, does the line colour affect the strike rate.
2) which colour of lures are good for barramundi.
3) At what speed should we retrive the lure when targetting barramundi.
4) Can we use poppers for barramundi.

Thanks in advance,
Nagesh

Hi,
I can only help you with your first point. You need to use a wire trace between your braid line and fishing lure, otherwise your line will be cut.
Regards

my views from what i have learnt and experienced...

1) can we tie a braided line directly to the lure, does the line colour affect the strike rate.
use a leader...barras are very spooky...they might sight the braid...
2) which colour of lures are good for barramundi.
lures with a tint of gold...greens and blues...
3) At what speed should we retrive the lure when targetting barramundi.
vary the speed...when the water is warm, retrive it at a medium pace without stopping untill it reaches the shore...when the water is cold, retrive it slow (dead slow ) but ensure that the lure has the action...At times you can reel in at a good speed and suddenly stop...This stop and retrive action can be repeated to break the monotony...Barras stike when the lure suddenly stops...
4) Can we use poppers for barramundi.
i have had no luck with a popper but i read on a blog that poppers work in the dark...we will have retrive the popper at a slow pace but it should be dark...

I have fished poppers when Barras were feeding on the surface when it was about to become dark and had strikes a couple of times on slooooow retrieve, but was not able to set the hook. But again, I have already landed a 6 kg barra on a different (shallow diving) lure by then and was trying to take another one on a popper. I would suggest a shallow diving plug instead though .... atleast the hook set will be solid that way.

when fishing for barramundis, i keep the terminal tackle to its bare minimum....the braid to the leader...the leader to the lure...sometimes i use a size 4 duo snap lock...when we sight barracudas then i use wire leaders...the wire leaders is not more than 4 inches and i colour it black...

Thanks Calvin

One more question.

How can you (try to) avoid a line getting cut when using a nylon / mono leader. A local angler from Khed (MH) told me that after tying a knotless knot to the hook we should double up the open end of the line and tie a 'braid' like twist (hard to explain) for at least 4 inches. This give kind of double reinforcement to the line if a toothed fish cuts one.

I will see if i can upload a pic of this setup, i just wanted your opinion on whether that too would be highly visible for the fish

Regards, ANand

World fisher (Scott) has answered all the queries ,just want to add about retrieve speeds sometimes a hide speed dash with a full stop of the lure excites a barra to strike.Another tip fishing around rock areas where barra lurks is approach the spot keeping a low proflie and wear dark colours to blend in with the rocks.Manori we have had strikes almost at the rock edge.Good Luck.
