Thanks Hamour.

How do the Shimano Saragosa & Daiwa Saltist spinning reels compare ? Do both of these reels need factory drag washers replaced by "carbontex" washers or equivalent?

Regards.

If you can afford it go in for a Stella or a Saltiga, they are the ultimate GT popping reels. A large GT is a very punishing fish. It is about trying to stop them before they head for the reef (if you can  ) that is why you need a real good Rod and Reel.

The more I look into this Reel the better is sounds, Get the 10,000 Sniper, it is made in Aussie with Aussie parts and has a 15 year warranty.

The Chinese have been selling repilcas at 1/4th the price, e.g. the attached link http://www.knkfishing.com/pd-ajiking-wa ... g-reel.cfm
I would not waste my money on a Chinese made reel, no matter what brand it's like buying a lottery.

I think I am going to get a 10000 Sniper myself.

I also understand that the reel does not have an anti reverse which is perfect, one less chink.

The only downside is it is heavy, around 130 grams more than an equivallent Saltiga. Saltiga 6500 = 819 grams / Diablo 10000 = 950 grams

I found this while looking it up:

Ashok,

I have been on fishing charter operations where they claim to provide the most" up to date equipment".

However, my experience has been that their reels/rods have had a fair degree of wear and tear on them and are difficult to use straight away as they take some getting used to.

You will be better off having your own equipment that you are used to and are comfortable with using in any situation.

Believe me, it is tough fighting a fish whilst at the same time trying to remember what the guide told you about "his"reel which seems to have the handle on the "wrong" side and a drag that is either too loose or too tight for your liking or the bail arm has to be manually tripped every time because that is how the guide "likes it".

Hi Ashok,

I am using Rapala Popping Rod and Saragosa 18000 and have caught around 10-15 GTs (10 - 25 kgs) both from shore and off shore..still going good..I bought Popping Rod in Thailand.. You should easily get to know the price of Saragosa from the net..

last week i got a 18.5Kg GT from chennai shore using Pioneer surf spinning rod (medium) and Penn Battle spinning reel using a GT Minnow stick bait and 50lbs braid

Ashok, i have seen Pioneer popping rod used by one of my friend and it is lighter than Rapala..I think it should be ok.. Since i am using Rapala, i can be very sure..In Thailand Rapala Popping Rod costs around TBH 4,900. Pioneer should have similar action and strudy i believe.

Robert,

The pioneer popping rod is available in Cochin for Rs.8000. Looks good for a beginner.

If you want mean popping rods
go for OTI Tuna sniper 8ft rod
Also for dedicated GT popping rod
Diawa has Saltiga UlUA popping rod 8'6ft rod (Ulua means GT in hawai).

as far as reel goes new saltiga Z mag sealed reel is only 21oz.

this will be a light weight GT setup which you can also use for GT popping from the rocks.

This setup you can easily set around 25lbs of drag. If you can handle it so can the tackle

@Bobbly new saltigas have less weight as there is no counter weight used .

note new saltiga is fully sealed and it will double as a good surf reel

@surfangler

I wouldn't touch the new Saltigas, especially if they were to be used in India.

Apart from being very expensive, their mag seal is making hardcore anglers think twice before shelling out their money.

Although an innovative idea, apparently the reel can only be serviced by
Daiwa because of this magnetic liquid and it seems the sealing of the reel against water is also not what it is cracked up to be.

I have not bought this reel because of the above factor

Of late, the new Penn Spinfisher V models seem to provide more bang for
the buck as they are relatively cheap at apprx. A$160, are reasonably water
tight for surf fishing and the higher numbered models have a drag rating of more than 20 kilos!

Perhaps this Penn, with a suitable surf or popping rod, would be a better
start up candidate for beginning surf and GT anglers.

The penn spinfisher does have good grag but the body cannot withstand the drag .

The mag seal works great and dosnt let any water in and also the the mag seal is what gives it the smoothness over rubber seals .

;As far as servicing is concerned it onmly needs one sevicing per 18 months.
It comes with lifetime free servicing.

if you can bear shipping costs once 18 months it is a jem of a reel.

It is one of the few reels who's rotor wont touch the spool at full drag.

there are some decent D.A.M popping rods with casting weight of upt o 250gms, cost around Rs 4000 they come with diffrent coloured tips very light weight and very strong.
penn battle would be the cheapest of reels for popping
followed by shimano spheros 8000pg should be ideal to catch 20kg GTs
