This year dawned with lots of hope of getting some good barras as the last day of the year also was blessed with a barra. But to my dismay no hits in the first month of 2011. Came Feb with it my first catch for the year. I would have just posted some pictures and would have done with the post but something bizarre happened which I would like to share with all.

I Lloyd and Damian were casting not far from each other say some 40’ feet apart. Suddenly I noticed some baitfish skimmer on the surface 30 feet on my right but only 4 to 5 feet away from the edge of the rock. I very slowly casted on the same spot but missed the spot. I gave a second try this time right on the mark , the lure had hardly hit the water and bang a strike but something was wrong I was not able to drop the bail arm but what. Two slow cast brued a recipe for slack line with a birds nest on one end and a barra on the other end. What should I do what, I was losing my nerve. Then suddenly my left palm covered the face of the reel and the right arm gave two sharp jerks . FISH ON!!! The hooks were set. But the bail arm still not ready to go down . I slowly started let lose some line when the line got slack I walked backward when the line got tight I loosened some line and this happened another 4 to 5 times and I gave one more try at the bail arm and it went down another five min of pump reel pump and the fish was gaffed out by Lloyd. The cold morning breeze was filled with joy but hope still prevailed in our hearts to get more. Half an hour later Damien got a hit from a big barra he tried his best to subdue the monster but in vain a after a minute or two the fish got away but it made a total mess of his 80lbs wire leader it looked something like the bottom of a safety pin. But someday we’ll get to the monsters . HOPE FLOATS [smilie=upyeah.gif]

Congrats on your catch. It is embarassing when such things happen when your dream fish is on the other end, but it's part of the game.
Wishes to catch the monster.

A very good catch Mario, and a very exciting narration. Keep on catching them.

These catches are from Mumbai Bobby. It is not published but the action on Mumbai coast is going on improving with lot of Barra and Ravas landed from your old haunts.

Ali. :-)

Thanks all you guys for your compliments and wishes.
@Bobby : Ali bhai is very much right not only this catch but all of my catches are from the mumbai coast. The only problem with spinning around Mumbai is one needs to put in a lot of time as there is tremendous comercial pressure.

Hi guys

New to this

But is that a Khajura ? I am not sure what a Barra is - like i said - newby.

I used to catch solid fighters like this off the Bombay Docks - in those days I was taken in with a security pass :-)

near the Naval ships , using Boi fish and a hand line while my mentor would use all his terrific equipment (which I have now inherited).

This same looking fish we caught many times - they would hit the lure hard and fight like anything . Knew them as Khajura - wonder if its the same.

Hi
Do you still get them Smelling / tasting of oil and kerosine ?
That's one of the main reasons I stopped.
Any good recommended spots around Colaba to still try for them ?
I remember they used to normally come out at night attracted by shore lights .

I did experience some action at the old Haunts this time in December. The report is incomplete, as I had a run of unfortunate incidents that I have had to take care of and am in the process of taking care of now. So I have just been too busy.

For the first time got hooked to a decent fighter . The bugger tried to get into every nook and coner available. It was fun keeping my nerves cool and using my presence of mind to avoid the fish from getting into the jagged rocks. Thanks for the tips and advice to all the Gurus on IA specialy Ken l.

Thanks to all for your Compliments and wishes.
@Keyur Thanks for saying such a nice thing to Become the Barra King of Mum but not intrested. Anyways there are so many guys who do minimum 4 to 5 barras a week with a rawas or a grouper or a MJ to compliment with it, that to huge ones . For me being in front of the open sea with the salty breeze in my face is more important.

Whatever the case......some of us have salty breeze in our face, but that doesnt mean that we are fishing. For most of us, its our sweat dripping under the hot sun.

cheers dude & keep them reports coming in.

good luck.

regards,
Keyur

Mario,

Do you keep a log of Barra catch vs date including hits and break away? In case yes, it will be very interesting to draw a pattern of feeding vs. tide.

Regards,

Ali.

Dont have any words to express how much of a fun and thrilling exprience it was. In short got hit on a popper and then the fight an fantastic exprience of reeling in, leting go on runs, avoiding taildances. In all it was fun, pure fun.
