the water gods have been kind to me this year. after a rather hectic 31st i hit the port on the 1st and the 3rd of the new year. it was low tide and the situation was not looking promising. i tied on my normal salty fav lure a firetiger poltergeist and cast quite a few times to no avail. then i noticed the tilsan barra lures in the tackle box which had been so successful in freshwater for me. i tied one on and in the second cast had a strike. the fight was spirited but short thanks to the tackle combo in use ( wildcat rod, penn silverado reel and 20 lb tuffline) i landed the thug (mj) and recommenced casting. after a few more casts i again had a strike and this time it seemed as if the fish on the end of the line was turbo charged with frequent jinks and sharp runs. it turned out to be a trevally . both fishes were in the 3-4 lb range. i waited to try and make it an east coast trifecta i.e. a mj,trevally and a barra. but it was not to be and i came back.
i again hit the port yesterday and again stared with a x rap and x rap magnum. that did not fetch me anything save a few anxious moments as the magnum almost got snagged. i then tried a pioneer trollcraft lure in white redhead and got a strike but no hook up . i decide to cast farther and in the swing dashed the lure on the rocks , breaking it in two. then again the tilsan barra was brought in to the play and it worked its magic. again a mj fell to the lure and it was followed by a bluefin trevally. what made the thing magical was that i could see the trevally actually chase the lure and the strike before it ran (yes polaroids do help). the fight was a great one and i can only think how hard a gt must fight when a 5-6 lber has this much mojo.thank god this time i had my slammer with 30 lb braid on the wildcat. the slammer has a really nice drag and does help in knocking the stuffing out of most fish.
tried again for a trifecta and i did get a strike by a smaller trevally , this guy was just slightly larger than the lure and would be a 1 lber by a stretch. i called it a day but shall go back tomorrow. the barra are still eluding me and i have to get one somehow.
any way happy new year to the IA family and tight lines!
