Greetings,

Last Saturday night was Binu's birthday. Me and him were talking about catching his birthday bass.
We went to a beach called Island Beach State Park in New Jersey (about 90 miles from our place) with high hopes.

We got there by about 06:30 PM and I had a really good feeling as it was pitch dark and cloudy.

I took a 7 inch cotton cordell redfin swimmer in black over purple (Black over Chrome is my favourite lure in Chennai - caught a few GTs and a barramundi). In about a couple casts, whammm ..... I got a strike and I thought I snagged my lure until it started to move slowly with a steady pull. I knew I had a fish on and I soon knew that this was a decent fish. In a few minutes I beached a nice 22 and odd pound/ 37 inch striper. While I was carrying this fish to my car Binu landed his 29 inch/9 pound striper using a black bomber lure.

I caught a couple more schoolies around 26 inches which were released and also missed hookups with 3 other fish (with sticky sharp VMC trebles). It was windy and the temperature was in low 30's (Fahrenheit). So obviously we were freezing and called it a night and headed home. Will upload the pics soon once I resize them to appropriate size.

Cheers, Maruthu

DeZZ,

That is Binu's reel. I am an Abu guy :-)
He has that reel loaded with 40# power pro.

I have fished it and yes it is a great reel but too expensive for me.
Besides, I do not dunk my reel and hence it is not a necessity for me.

Last season was not that great for us other than some schoolies here and there.
I am cleaning up my gear tonight as I can only fish till it's low 30's but not low 20's

I however will be logged in here all winter.

Here are a some pics from Montauk, NY (they call it the surf fishing capital of the world) from two weeks ago.

Image

Here is the same fish again with better lighting. I had to capture that light house in the first pic :-)

Binu took this striper on a metal (T-Hex) with a green tube tail.
I caught one about the same size on a bucktail jig with a pork rind trailer.
I did not take any pics of my fish and both the fish were released.

But the trip was great fishing Montauk.
Here is a clip that shows how the fishing is up there.

Hoping for a great spring!

Cheers, Maruthu

Thanks Bobby and Jeen.

Dezz,
The VS is a nice reel. The feel when you crank the reel is too good. You cant spin it real fast, but I like that feel.
It casts very well, and has a very nice drag. And the best thing is its so easy to clean, dont have to worry about saltwater or sand getting into the reel.
But it lays line like an hour glass, and its ok with me, otherwise the reel is a great piece of machinery.

Regards,
Binu

Is that Van Stall a manual pickup? I have one that is a Manual pickup, I have never used it though and it is in Mint Condition. The winding is not as smooth as some of my other reels. Does this ease up after use? If yes after how many trips or spinning hours (estimate)?

Yes Bobby its a manual pickup. The winding feels still the same as it was when I bought. :-)

Binu
