hit the port today, the weather was marvelous and the surf pounding. tried my fav lure the roosta popper and kept casting with no strikes. then lost the lure to the rocks. tried to get it out and almost lost my retriever. so snip went the clippers and the popper was lost.this was the only popper i had and i tied on a hydro slider on. this gave me good distance and i had a missed strike. it was fun to see the slider cart wheel thru the air. then i had a strike. i had spent yesterday freshwater fishing and by god ! the difference in the way the slaties and the freshies fight is huge. it felt like i was fighting a huge murrel and after a 2 min tussle out comes a sub 2 lb trevally .
i kept casting but then decided to move to the docks as locals had told me about barramundi being present. tried my lures and sabiki rig. got a small scat fish and then on the action shifted to bait fishing with "atta". got quite few scat fish and others which i cant identify the locals took the lot off my hand and told me to come back at night if i want to catch barra. shall do that after june 13. till then it is only the occasional freshwater foray with the weekly trip to the port.
so thats one more lure which has earned its keep and which i have learned to work some what satisfactorily.

Keep the smaller fish alive and use them as live bait for the night fishing. You should catch some Mangrove jacks and barramundi around the rocks.

Cheers

Hi Doc,
If you are certain of the Barra being around, try the "Cotton Cordell-Red fin" (silver body with reddish Gill lines). They have worked excellently well for me. It is a shallow runner and runs about 2 feet below the surface.

Barra is an ambush predator and almost always attacks your lure from under, and the strikes happen a little after sunset till late in the night.
