Hi guys
Last saturday Toji and myself headed out to our favourite estuary haunt and this time I was targeting Groupers, I thought I was ready for them this time and using the 9' fxs shimano and a heavy duty chinese 10 $ reel 25lb mono I cast out the same kind of all red sea queen lure I lost to a good sized grouper last season and guess what I got beaten again, this time too I got hit on my very first cast and the grouper just vanished in 5 seconds into his/her hole and broke me off, had my drag really cranked down, but guess my rod wasn't as stiff as I thought it was.

Next I took out a leader flouro 50 lb and tied on a green firetiger of the same size and cast out again and in 5 minutes had my very first and second MJs, just dead lifted them out of the water, had my heart after the lady grouper of the neighbourhood when applying all my energy into pulling them out, to my joy, my first mj (on a lure) a 1 kg and then followed by a 2 kg brute both on the same lure within 5 minutes, then the fish were all off the bite so headed home.

This saturday had a repeat, no grouper hits, just a 1.5 kg MJ on a red halco laser pro. Had heard and read and seen MJs on lures, but these were my first, so made me very happy
Will post photos later

Fantastic. I love a good chase. Stay after that grouper and you'll get him mate. In the meantime enjoy yourself with the MJs.

PHISH! Are you watching this? Right in your backyard.

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for the report! I know the grouper story well...you think your tackle will be up to it but the grouper often decides otherwise

Well done with the MJ's! good show...they put up a great fight :D they are also very partial to blue/mackeral lures so if you can get similar lures in this colour give them a bash.

all the best,

Scott
