Greetings,

The beach fishing in Chennai is about to close for the season as the river mouth was getting closed naturally as I saw.
Me and Binu went there for some GT fishing, but the surf was shallow due to changing sand structures. I was able to see big GTs tearing up bait at some distance out of reach. We were casting metals and poppers for a while until I saw some action right at the bottom of our feet in the wash. We then switched to 7" Cotton Cordel Red Fin swimmer.

After a few casts I had a strike and a bent rod. After the fish took some 15 feet of line with a decent drag, I tightened the drag to tire him, thinking it was a GT. Last time I hooked a GT, most of my line was gone in seconds before I even realised. But now after tightening the drag, the fish almost stoppped and I thought that was a barracuda. Since this happened in the wash, I beached the fish in the next wave and it turns out to be a barramundi in the 8 to 9 pound range.

This fish in almost gold colour was one of the most beautiful fish I have seen in the ocean. Pics (from Binu's cell phone) will be uploaded on Monday.

Thanks,
Maruthu

Here are a couple of pics of the 4' wide river mouth today.
Catfish were trying to make it into the ocean before the mouth closed.

I was using a Shimano Stradic 5000 reel with 150 yards of 30 lb power pro with some amount of 20# mono backing. Rod was an 8' tica dolphin surf spinning rod. This set up held up well for some decent fish (upto 18 pound GT) from the beach (No rocks nearby).

Tathagata, it was landed within 10 seconds. So I think there was no time for the fish to do any tailwalks

Hello,

This river is in kovalam which is on the way to mahabalipuram.
River mouth is still closed. Eagerly waiting for river mouth to open. Excepting this next month.

Hey mate,
have tried at Besant Nagar long back and caught only catfishes.
Try Fishing harbor or Kovalam, those are some better locations.

Regards,
Binu
