Last Sunday, Maruthu Simon and I went to our favorite fishing spot in Chennai. We saw that the high tide was at 5 pm and reached there by 4.00 pm. As usual we started rigging, and walking on the shore when we saw that the GT's were feeding. We casted our poppers and were reeling, there were lots more than one GT feeding that day.
Simon got the first hit, all I saw was a big splash near his popper and Simon was struggling with his rod, It took him more than 20 mins to land the fish. Phew it was around 8 kilo a good size GT.
Maruthu got the next strike, near the shore and he landed the fish pretty easily, he was using his favorite conventional rod with a abu reel. While he was landing the fish, a fish was chasing my popper, but I yanked a bit quickly and the fish let the popper go :(
Maruthu's fish was released quickly. We saw some cudas feeding around 100 yards from us, and Maruthu gave me a good lure and asked to try for cudas.
I casted twice but now hits, on the third cast I was reeling slowly as Maruthu had suggested, a big hit, and my reel was screaming, the fish took a lot of line in the first run. I thought it was a cuda, but knew cuda would make their first run very long, but this wasn't like that. It took a good 25 mins to land the fish; it was another GT around the 8 kilo mark.
Had a great day, we all had caught fish, and it was the first for me and Simon :)
Maruthu, your advice had always helped me, we'll do more of surf this weekend :):)
Thanks everyone for your advice given earlier on GT Fishing.
I'll post the pics soon..

Regards,
Binu.

That's me with an estimated 6 kilo GT. Small one, but gave a nice fight even with the medium heavy gear that I was using.
It took about 5 minutes to land this little guy.

Hi Maruthu,

Good show mate! Loks like you cracked the GT code. Use bigger poppers or Sticks to get the seniors. Believe me they are there the 20kg and above are there.

Jeen,

I saw a local handliner work a Yozuri surface bull GT like a charm and even get hit by the BIG ones.

I had issues working bigger poppers (they jump out of the water), but I was practicing today morning in the sun to pop a Yozuri surface bull GT from the surf. Now I could work that thing kind of okay.

Will keep everyone updated :-)

Thanks,
Maruthu

Thanks Everyone :-)

Santhosh, the shore is sandy, but there are a couple of rocks scattered in the sea. In low tide some of the rocks will be visible.

Hi Maruthu,

Very nice fish. Your posts on fishing with poppers have got me thinking....
I will carry a couple of popping rods back with me when I return to Bangalore. A heavy set up and a light one. Am looking at trying some popping along the eastern coast. Will keep in touch with you in the future.

Regards,

Mighty Marlin.

MM,

When are you coming to Chennai? Can't wait to fish with you.
BTW, I came across some cudas in the shore temple rocks in Mamallapuram :-) Let's go get 'em.
Also, will be exploring some brakish water around Pondicherri in coming weeks :-)

Hi Maruthu,

Sounds interesting. I leave the Andaman Islands in May. I'll have to head back to Bangalore and spend sometime there or I'm going to get into serious trouble with my girlfriend. I'll be around till early september before I head back. So anytime post June should be great. I'll PM you regarding the details of the fish you catch so I can carry the right selection of lures..... I'm sitting on a couple of hundred poppers
Have you seen/hit any big GT........30kilo+ ? The biggest we've caught this year was a 45+ kilo fish on popper!!

Regards,

Mighty Marlin.

MM,

I shall keep you updated about the reports.
As far as big fish, there are 30 kilo + fish in the harbour, but they don't take my presentation of poppers, even big poppers like Yozuri surface bull GT and other custom made big Japanese popper don't seem to interest those big guys. It had been a while since I been there, but I will hit that place soon and give it a try again.

However, big GTs hit poppers in the surf. I saw a very big GT hit a Yozuri surface bull popper of a local professional fisherman, but did not hook up. That should certainly be well over 20 Kg.

Good catch, worth the effort. More of us will have to take up shore fishing as the licence raj gets worse for inland fishing.
