Hi, am a student from Norway, that are doing a project in river water chemistry at the Manipal institute of Technology (near Manglore). I have been in India since the middle of June and are staying in Manipal untill end of August.

In September and October my plans are to do a lot of traveling around India and Nepal. Going up north in the beginning and then heading down to the Andaman islands in late October.

Back home I am a very eager angler, and I would love to some angling during my stay in India. Back home I spend most of my time tracking down big pike, perch, trout and saltwater predators like cod and halibut.

Have done some research about jigging and popper fishing on the Andaman islands, but I would appreciate some input and tips from you guys. Know that is not aloud to post info about commercial tours, but will be thankful for tips on PM.

Any tips on fishing locations near Manglore would also be nice.

Best regards Andreas.

Hi André,

Welcome to IA. I would try the pier at Malpe, just off Udupi. Heard there are some big catfish there. 8)

Thanks for the tips. Any idea what kind of catfish?? The water down there looks like coffee these days, but some smelly bait fish might do the trick..

Hi Andreas, welcome to the forum. Malpe is one of the best spots for saltwater shore fishing. I fished there recently from the rock pier that extends out to the sea behind the TEBMA shipyard. Use sardines for dead bait at the end of the pier just before and after high tide and you should land some mangrove jack and barramundi (just after sunset). Ideally live prawn or mullet should be used as bait.
