Myself, Viraj

Love angling, NOT hunting. Am interested in conservation and sustaining & iimproving our angling environment. I think a lot needs to be learnt & researched regarding freshwater fish, esp the Mahaseer and this site will aid that effort.

I also read a bit, mostly Mughal History, Ancient Indian & development Economics. Have travelled extensively in India and am curently based in New Delhi running my own business.

My wife, Monisha is a senior exec with an infrastructure firm and have 2 kids - Kismat, 9, Boy(who incidentally is named after my father's angling friend) and Naira, 3, Girl.

Life is good, my close friends are anglers.

Cheers

Viraj

Hello Viraj,

As one new tick to another, they seem to be a nice bunch of chaps on here, so pull up a chair and start heckling Rustam!

Dear Viraj,

Welcome to the forum. You would be surprised to know that before I started angling my dream WAS to be a big game hunter.

But that did not have 1% effect on my love for outdoors, belief in conservation and love for wildlife.

I believe that there hunters out there who are priceless for our conservation movement both fish & wildlife.

Provided the government of the day pulled it's finger out and introduced sustainable hunting.

True Rustam,

The threat to fish & wildlife comes for eyeing what is left for our forest & rivers [very little anyway] for dams, mining projects, pandering to vote banks and by the lack of specialised, dedicated and motivated department catering exclusively to fish & wildlife conservation. As recently a person in charge of a fishing camp explained that he had not once seen any guard from the Forest Deptt patrolling the river he takes his clients for Mahseer fishing for poachers, in years!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I used to Hunt with my Dad and then friends in the North and realized that the hunting was less hunting and more poaching and also that night spotting was not on..

Regarding sustainable hunting to keep our forests 'alive', I agree, yet I feel that it will take a serious effort to get it going. A couple of my friends, who are avid hunters discussed the idea, I offered to help form a non-profit society...and nothing since then.

Maybe avid hunters and conservationists can come together thru this site to debate/discuss the means of taking it further..

Thanks again for the warm welcome

Viraj

Avid hunters have to be conservationists because if they aren't there'd be nothing to hunt.

Gentleman would seriously recommend that we do not discuss any hunting in India either on this forum or IFG as hunting is completely banned with the exceptions of animals declared as vermins in certain states.

Cheers Rohit.

Sorry Bops have to comment here..

Rohit understand your sentiments, however, you have got to voice your opinions or nothing will happen. I have been trying to get myself a gun licence for the last 15 years unsuccessfully but I am not giving up, if I do not succeed I can still say I tried than having to regret the rest of my life “what if”. Why should we keep quite?

Forums like this are perfect places where people with similar interests can jointly voice their opinions. Especially on topics like environment, hunting, fishing which a lot of folk in India just take for granted or consider it to be a waste of time. It is at places like this where you come to realize that you are not alone and there are a lot of "like minded" people. It MUST help you voice your self out and not get into a shell only then things will happen.

It's like this, if you do not ask you will not get, and believe me, life is all about rewards. Only people like us will truly care about water bodies, forests, conservation, environment because we really understand and yes we get rewarded, not financially but something far greater than that. As far as a lot of others are concerned it power and money at the end of the day. Sure we want the dosh too, but that’s not an end in itself. I like to think we are different.

You cannot catch a fish no matter what equipment you have unless you go to the water....so we need to speak out.

Well said that man!

What's the problem with the arms licence, Bobby? E-mail me with the details and perhaps I could point out what if anything you are doing wrong.
