Hi There,
I am Madhur from Mumbai .I've been lurking around this site for some time now, and finally decided to dive in.It's been a wonderful experience going through the myriad of information present on this site.

I've been fishing( junglee style ;)) with a bunch of enthusiastic friends for some time now.Using any thing from coke cans to water/soft drink bottles as reels.. and just some very basic tackle. But "at times" we did mange to land some good catch(huge sting rays, snappers, and a shit load of catfish..).Very recently I was gifted a telescopic rod(some Korean make) and a Mitchell front drag spinning reel.

Our tackle inventory has been steadily growing with stuff like Diawa reels,Rapala lures,Braided lines(we never knew such stuff existed)

Now since we have some basic equipment.I guess its time for us to get a bit technical and learn more about the sport. And since I am the only computer savvy person in the gang I think I'll have to take that initiative.

looking forward for a lot of tips and help from you guys.

Cheers,
Madhur.

PS. Any Anglers from Mumbai?

Hi there Madhur,

Great to have you on board mate.

Sure you'll find a lot of info out here. But I think you should help all us and give us a refresher course into the basics. All this gear removes you from the real thing in a way. There nothing to beat the feel of a big fish at the other end of a good old bottle.

Incidentally, a Coke bottle has the perfect shape for a reel. :)

cheers

Hi every one,

Well, Bobby & Keyur, I stay at mira rd.

But our group is based in Malad(w). and this is where we fish 90% of the time with occasional trips to Uttan or Gorai.
-----------------------------------------------------

Hey Heliox, tell you what... the Rocky Spots around BHATI,ICE FACTORY,PATHWADI,MADH are our regular hangouts(about once/twice every fortnight).Hope to see you there some time.Cheers!

------------------------------------------------------

Hi Mahaseerken, Thanks man. hope your not kidding me on the coke bottle refresher thing ;).. any way here's a pic. of the "Bottle rig"
Image
.BTW the recent Fanta bottle(the curvy one) works the best as it has the perfect contour for casting long distances(just my 2cents worth).

The good thing about these primitive techniques is the sheer involvement of the team..its just a matter of some one hooking a biggie and the entire team swings into action, which seems like a cross between tug of war and kite flying! and hopefully some one is winding the loose line on the bottle(lot of abuses if one fails to do so;))..its utter chaos but its fun nevertheless. Cheers mate!.

------------------------------------------------------

Bopanna,Santosh, rulerofsun, thanks for the welcome you guys.

hoping to learn a lot for you people.

Regards,
Madhur.

Not kidding you mate. I also started with a bottle and line. Now I carry one little rig in my bag and use this whenever I get the chance. just to repeat myself, the fun of a handline is hard to beat.

Will hook up with you whenever I get to Bombay.

cheers

Hey Santosh,

Well, personally we never got any thing great besides catfish in that area but I guess thats largely due to our poor technique, besides we have yet to try artificial lures in Mumbai.

Although I know of local fisher men who use some Chinese lures(similar to the magnums) to catch what they call Khazra.I can't entirely trust their stories as they always hype up things, but they seem to be getting these big fish fairly regularly.I guess they must be trolling these lures on their way to putting nets in deeper waters, also none of them have any fishing rods!.

Also if you are fishing in the night on the dongri side( jetty) be extra careful of cops who WILL harass you... Knowing the locas helps a lot.Parking your car a long long way from the jetty is a must! (leave no traces for the cops).

Regards,
Madhur.

Hey Santosh,

khazra= Barramumdi.. :o Ohh... thanks :)

A bit off topic, but.. did you have any luck with these Barramundi in Mumbai?? Also wanted to know if lure fishing is worth trying in our muddy waters?.Any tips on using artificial lures would be gospel as this is a totally unexplored territory for me.

Cheers,
Madhur.

PS.I may be taking off to uttan tomorrow... any special tips for the barramundi? Bait,Tackle, locating fish etc... thanks in advance ;)

Unnatural colors for muddy waters and natural colors for clear water. Reel it in medium speed i.e. not to fast and not to slow should do the trick however for rocky areas do not forget wire leader.
Best of luck on your trip.

Thanks buddy,
"Unnatural colors for muddy waters" In that case the Rapala firetiger should do a good job.I'll give it a shot.

one more thing, I've got the wire leader with the snap link. but I am not quiet sure about the correct way of attaching it to the main line.Any advice on best knots for this purpose?.

Cheers,
Madhur.

Oh..I only have the jointed minow and the x-rap magnum besides the firetiger and they both have natural colours.. I guess I'll have to stick to the firetiger.

I have seen a fake red head(some cheap far east brand) at a tackle shop near my place..Is it worth buying??

Cheers,
Madhur.

Hi Madhur,

I prefer the Improved Clinch Knot, you can also use Palomar Knot (very easy).
