Every Sunday I take my dogs for a run and swim to this place at Karjat by the river Pej. From what I have found out this river comes down from Bhivpuri where the Tata dam is located.
It is a perennial river whose flow is controlled by the dam.In the mornings the flow is gentle and there are many stagnant pools. The water from the dam is released at around 11 am on weekdays and 1-2pm on Sundays.
The water levels rise at these times and the flow is much stronger. There is a section on the river just after some rocky areas where the banks are sandy and the water is almost stagnant. The banks are riddled with large burrows which i assume are those inhabited by land crabs. From what I have read about murrel I take it that they very often inhabit the empty burrows in pairs.
There are plenty of paddy fields on either side of the river too.
Does it sound like good location for murrel?
I have started ground baiting in case there are any carp in the waters too(atta mixed with ghee, dried shrimp paste, hing and fish oil)
The small fish close to the banks look like mostly small algae eaters and loaches.Ther are plent of damselflies on the banks.

Dont have any frog lures but have a spinner or two.
Would appreciate any advise on a plan to catch some murrel here.

Here are some pics of the spot in question.

Hey Yaj - By the looks of it, I dont think they could be any big fish in the waters ( But I could be wrong  ) But looks like a nice place for some decent size fish..
This looks like good spot for murrel.
Keep groundbaiting and who knows

Was too tired Sat night to set up my gear(get line onto reel etc).So just went with the dogs and did some more ground baiting. Anyway fishing with the dogs around is going to be impossible with them cannoning into the water every few minutes .I will probably have to go without them someday to try some serious fishing.Hey maybe i'll try out that fish finder i bought a few years back to see if there is any activity. Are they any good?NorCross HawkEye FF3300P Portable Fish Finder?

Santosh called me while i was at the river and we were planning a trip to the Kundalika river which definitely has good fishing. If he doent plan to have any Holi celebrations we might do it this Sunday.

Gavin I'll settle for a decent fish mate :-) .Continuing ground baiting but every once a week is too long an interval maybe but got no choice its 70 km from where I live :(
Yaj.

Yaj, that's excellent water for Marul. Spinners should work well, attach a small rubber grub on the spinner hook for added attraction. You may need to fish close to the bottom and bounce the spinner off the rocks. If there is Marul there, they will strike.

Yaj, Take your sonologist pal and his portable machine, drop the linear probe in the water and have fun
Stories aboound of fish being programmed to respond to many stimuli and the food cycle...imprinting of some sort should work with fish-as the experts here will attest. So ground bait, keep the dogs off the water and have a good time.
I hope the waters there are warmer than here? I'm told all fishing is done after holi...

Thanks Gav thats good to know :-)

Asif, the fish finder I have has a 25 deg probe. As for sonologist pal  I married her  .
We barely have winters here though Karjat is cooler than Mumbai. But by 10.30 am the sun is scorching already.

Yaj, thats a damn sight better than us here! the water is so cold that there's no sign of the bloody mutants.
have chalked out a nice spot and will have to go there post holi-the locals swear to get me 50kgs a day.Want to see their looks when I start C&R hope I dont get lynched...
That tree on the far bank? play around there-looks suspiciously good...
Sonologist? make use of the situation! I have my dentist wife hleping me with wire bending and making acrylic bodies for my spinners, lots of monomer/polymer being mixed
I dont know, going by the look of the water in the pics, doesent look deeper thatn 8-10 ft...let us know-turn on your death beam

Bobby,
What brownie points? She's made a couple of good casts so far, esp the one where she got me in one! 8)
Drives me and the kids to the swim, fetches us coffee and cookies and does loads more, except be an active party to hauling the fish in. Hope to change that by and by...even agreed to let me buy her a handgun-so guess who's getting my ppk/s in 22
YAj-let us know how it goes...
Mken-sure , let me make sure that this is not a figmentation of the locals imagent! heard too many stories of this sort.

"Got me with one cast" you conceited so n so, sure it was not the other way round where you cast for months on end

Good for you mate!! My wife is not much of a fishing buff, though she can cast a lure etc..
She is more fond of hunting, shooting actually, does not like killing stuff, she is an excellent shot..so I pay attention.

Sorry about this one Bops, could not help it, look at it as a place where Gav can get some of the ingredients for his special Rohu bait..

And back to fishing...

Went to Crazy Horse Bar in Singapore. Thanks for the advice Bobster/Fredfish. You really can't separate the women from the boys. Thank God my wife has a rusty knife.

Chatting up 2 ESF school teachers, half way through the phone rings, I told them, that's the wife, just to put a spin on thing. I know where to draw the line, possessed or not

Got home at 0300 hours after a drink at Hong Kongs most notorious bar..Fenwicks (little South America).
