Has anyone used a baitcaster for Murrel? .. they're very popular in the US for bass, etc..

Cheers,

It should work well for murrel. I've used them on pike in the canals of Belgium and they work really well with plugs.

HI ALEXIS, THERE IS NOTHING TO BE GAINED BY USING A BAIT CASTER AS OPPOSED TO A FIXED SPOOL REEL WHEN IT COMES TO FISHING LIGHT BAITS. IF THE WEIGHT IS OVER 15 GRMS. AND THE LINE IS IN THE 6 LB CLASS THEN OK. IF THE WEIGHT IS LESS THAN 15 GRMS THEN A FIXED SPOOL WILL OUT CAST THE BAIT CASTER EVERY TIME. I USE A ABU 5600 FOR PIKE FISHING WITH RAPALA LURES WEIGHING IN EXCESS OF 20 GRMS. AND FIND THAT THIS BAIT CASTER CAN IMPART A LIFELIKE MOVEMENT TO THE PLUG AS THERE IS NO BACKLAST WITH A BAITCASTER. FOR ORDINARY SPINNER USE A FIXED SPOOL IS BEST AS THE SPINNER ONLY REQUIRES A STEADY RETRIEVE TO WORK. IT IS ALL ABOUT BALANCED TACKLE. HENRY GONSALVES

I agree with you on cast weights for bait caster reels Henry, but for casting accuracy, i feel the bait caster is a better reel (small or big reels).

Hi Alexis,

I am not sure if you gave baitcasters a try. I shifted to them a few months back and wouldn't consider using a spinning reel now. Give it a go if you haven't done so already.

I use baitcasters 90% of the time for murrels. I also use baitcasters
about 70% of the time for most fishing. I do like spinning reels
for small live bait and real light lures.

Favorite Murrel setup is a Steez 100HA reel on a Steez STZ671MHFBA
rod.
