Since Murral are known to take surface baits, as evinced by scum frogs etc, any one tried poppers? would like to hear of such experiences, provided they dont come under any 'fishy' official secrets act!
I have a roosta popper I'm waiting to cast out for murral 8)

Don't see a reason why murrel may not go for a popper.

Let us know what happens ...

Hi Eljefe,

Popper fishing for murral is one thing that will work. I don't see murral being shy taking a surface lure. I did try some popper fishing for murral a while back but came up with no fish. I guess I wasn't really trying hard enough and was not fishing ideal water. I used the alimagnet by YoZuri then. The small Halco poppers should work fine.

I'll probably fish for them with popper when I get to the Cauvery next, so will let you know how that goes.

Regards,

Mighty Marlin.

Eljefe,

This is what has worked for me - although I must say that this doesnt seem to work during the warmer parts of the day - I have had about 4 murrel to about 2 kg on this lure...I guess that when the sun is up - 10 am to about 5 pm the murrel are feeding mid to bottom. I had 1 fish early AM around 7 AM and the other 3 were between 5:30pm and 6:30pm. All were in still and quiet water on the Kaveri - at Bheemeshwari and Doddamakali.

Best times for fishing in general as they tend to head for deeper waters during the day. Nice to see the poppers that work for you.

Just one question: Is this the only color that worked?

This style of lure...yes this is the only one that worked... :-) but then again....in this style I have only 1 lure....

True about the fish in deeper waters later in the day but with Murrel - on the spinner you can get them throughout the day...its just the depth that you work them that seems to make the difference...at different times of day

the 4 critters i got on your rod in MP were taken on a floating jointed rapala... did not have a popper with me so therefore was improvising with the floater and it worked... more details over the keg!
