Just checked one of my e=mail accounts and there was an invitation to check out a new snakehead page on a Malaysian fising forum. Just thought you guys might fancy a quick look to see what (if any) tips you can pick up.

I have been sea fishing this summer along the sussex coast and have come across some double figure smoothounds and some lovely bass. Also smashed my barbel pb with an 11lb 4oz beauty. Will mail you some pics when i get them off my buddy.

Toman are very much on my radar for my next trip but I have been following the 9kg murrel thread with interest.
Good to here that you're getting some sea fishing done and catching.
River fishing in the midlands has been a total washout this summer and even though I got out on Monday afternoon, I struggled with only a dozen or so fish.
Have you been following Scott's blog ? Some awsome photo's but very few fish !

Depends on what you read and who you talk to....
Although "Murrel" is used as a bit of a catch all term for Snakeheads in India, a lot of people seem to be referring to Channa marulius, (AKA the Great snakehead) when they talk about murrel in India.
Of course, Bops is your man for a firm diagnosis with his IGFA hat on.

The murrel is the Channa Marulius aka Marul.

Thanks for clarifying that Bops.
BTW. I watched the "Fishzilla" program on Discovery the other night and they were talking about the growing problem of several snakehead species that are breeding in the US. I t was all very sensationalized but they apparently have a wild propulation of giant snakehead (Channa micropeltes) over there but incorrectly showed it's native range to include several Indian rivers.
There was a debate on here a little while ago about whether Channa micropeltes was actually present anywhere in India. Is the jury still out on that one or is it a definate no - until they're released by some aquarist or other.

Edit: In answer to my own question, I just found this indicating that there is a population in Kerala. Has anyone actually caught one ?
