I had recced the pump house a few weeks ago. It was a short trip with a few plugs. And I came back with only hope.

Indiangypsy and I finally made it back this morning. we hit the place as the sun was coming up and things were looking bright.

As bait we had out spinners, plugs, spoons and a lot of chicken gut and mutton scraps that the Gypsy had carried.

Within a few seconds the chicken gut baited lines went in and we started plugging and spinning.

The first 30 mins went blank. And then Indiangypsy's chicken rod started clicking and then pouring out line.

Was it a big mulley... a bigger goonch... lots of questions were thrown up. but by the time they could be answered Indiangypsy had been dragged a good 100mtr down stream. And still there was no sign of what was at the other end of the line.

20 mins and a lot of sweat later if showed its head and then its back... boy was it big. The damn turtle would have been way over 10kgs and that is without a gram of exaggeration. Fortunately we did not have to deal with the guy as the snap swivel snapped as the turtle came to the side

here are two pics of the gypsy being dragged down stream by the turtle. (sorry about the quality. they were taken with a cam phone)

After that he got two more bites. The first on a spoon and the second on gut. They were big goonch that ran a few feet and then sat and bit through the line with ease.

As for me. i did not get anything. not even a tan. But hey there is always next time. When we get back with heavier line/rope and an electric winch.

Missed you doc. Next time?!?

The word is that the canal's flow is being stopped on the 25th for a couple of weeks. And this is when the fish all gather at the spot.

Ken, Gypsy,
I missed the fun-
was teaching a bunch of newbies about how to pump air into a patient's lungs in air transport...
Gypsy goes fishing with a rod the size of a mainsail ? Goonch sat and bit thru your line?
50lb braid?
And I was planning to get only my light Murral rod...What planet you guys fishing on? Goonch do that?
Time to break out my wire leaders...
Will carry the heavy fibre beach caster if I make it there.Am onleave next sat and sun! did it right this min.toitle or goonch-want to see some fun.
Best
Axx

Then edit your earlier post and remove the links to the above pics. Then replace with the correctly sized pics.

There's a nice image of a 'cute' and 'attractive' goonch somewhere... i think it is a fairly recent thread started by Vedan.... check the mahseer section.

And Isimon don't worry about what people say. Just come out of the closet with your goonch thing.

I think the Pump House Turtle has gone back into his shell.

Now how Freudian is that.

I was on survey in the chandigarh-kiratpur sector just few days back ..

Do all the canals have fish ??/ We may have passed 3-4

It's a killer to be driving past water and not being able to wet a line. I do it all the time. What makes me feel better is that most of the canals have nothing in them. You might get the occasional eel (baam) but that's it. The only place where you could get fish is at a step in the canal that cause a bit of a boil or if there is a confluence. Places like these hold some fish but not always.

Jude did you manage to catch anything on your trip?
