Hey All!

Just found a small pond stocked with Magur, right in the middle of Delhi. Since I am desparate (the rains have killed all chances of heading for the hills) I am going to catch the lil buggers.

What should I use? Will they take any kind of artificial?

HI Gav,

a bit OT, ned to know HOW you use the oilcake?
I've only gotten oilcake thats hard as dried clay and wont dissolve in water-you're right, it stinks!
do you powder it by hand and then mix in other stuff or what?
Thanks

Thanks Mate. By the way the pond is in Vasant Kunj, on the road that connects it to JNU, opposite the Atomic/nuclear center. It was stocked around a year ago by a 'Thekedar' who has netted the place and gone. Lots of fish break the surface early morning and late evening. Will try a small fly. Let's see what happens.

Eljefe - You have to pound it by hand or better still get someone else to do it
You can also soak some in water, just a couple of days before you go fishing.. Ensure the water level is just about an inch above the level of the powdered oil-cake and the container is air-tight.. This works well for coarse fishing and rohus and kalbouse are attracted to this ground bait..
WARNING:: Please open the container, outdoors and downwind..

Hi Gav,

On 7th to 12th of this month I was in Tripura and the place is pockmarked with small and big ponds. So I thought there would be tackle shops around. There was only one shop and I found some ready mix and mixed stuff for ground baiting. The mixture has a lot of rasgolla ras and stuff like jeera powder, elaichi and so many things. Since I dont understand much of the sileti bengali language I couldnt figure out the whole recipe. I had asked whether they use rum and they said no. They says it is for the catlas. Seen a lot of localites buying the stuff in gms and kgs. Myself bought 200gms and plan to use it my own pond for the catlas. Should I have to mix rum in that mixture?

Cheers,
Apoo

You just can't beat a dad daughter combo. I love taking her riding early every weekend and she pretends to be very excited about going fishing. So the minute she got off Miss Maggie we were off to the pond to see the magur. And that's when the crap hit every thing, literally.

We reached the pond at 8 and sure enough there were locals fishing. That was the only thing nice about it. In my daughter's words and she's only 4. "Dad these fish must be pigs, they live in garbage". "Why has everybody thrown their plates here, was there a party." "Don't step in the potty." "Close your nose". "Let's go back".

The place is a dump/toilet and a eco disaster. From the road it looks pretty, come closer and you turn green.

The good news. We saw a nice 1kg magur taken a few feet from the bank. The guy catching them said he lost his long line to a 5kg fish (a legend is born?).

So I guess I'll be back. without my daughter and with a close pin.

Hey Apoo, Where you fishing mate ??
Anyways, you don't have to add rum to the ground bait you bought.., but would suggest that you take some "cheera" or "chuura" and soak it overnight in some country liquor... Add this to your ground bait and use... Will work well... 250gms of chuura will do..

Hey Mken,
ALL if not most sewers of NCR are eco friendly, organic manure dumps
Dev & I have a fav on the Hindon barrage which we labelled 'Toxic Greens' in memory of a an old movie 'soylent green' 8)
Involved a lot of detoxication/ NBC suits, burning ghat upstream, getting rid of terminal tackle -gift off to local anglers the works!
Kind of gave up...too bloody tedious
Heard Rohtak is open ,any info? we can make it a day trip on a sat ONLY!!

Gav,
Will put the maid to the task this weekend-5kg of oilcake-what are you, a kali paani escapee?
A question for you- after soaking in water and opening container outside and down wind, what do i do with the oilcake next?
OB,
need some ragi flour when you come here next-about 5 kg please?
Best
Axx

Mix with mud,,, annd make them into ping-pong-ball-sized balls and use as ground bait.. 10 balls should do just fine.. Also the balls should be a bit soft.. ( OK - NO WISE CRACKS, PLEASE !!! )

Only one suggestion.. Instead of using coconut oil, use ghee to mix with the bread.. Given below are the combos of the bread-ghee bait:

1) Mix with jeera
2) Mix with hing
3) Mix with Cheera/Country Liquor mix
4) Mix with the Oil-Cake groundbait. ( You can use the Oil-cake paste as a topping)
5) Mix with Rotten Cheese

You can dip the bait in the coconut oil before casting out..

Also, if you preparing the ground bait as mentioned in one of my earlier threads, you can add a litre of coconut oil for every 5kgs of ground bait prepared..

Hey Mken,
If you go back, to 'nuclear magur tank' will try hand lining with a ghaziabad hook and a bunch of worms-thats all the locals would hav been using, right?
Would 'nt want to wade thru the mcaca-done it too many times mate! thats why the sudden urge to hit Rohtak tank-I believe the price per rod has gone up to Rs.200/day Means fish are biting... :D :D :-)

Gavin & the Desperados, you guys have it all worked out, now just catch some fish.
Hey Asif, i hope you haven't asked your dad to buy ragi? Coz i will bring you fresh stuff when i come there. I don't believe the ragi is at its best gluten wise after a month.
Regards
Owen

Hey Axx!

Rohtak sounds like a plan. But we do it after the 4th. In the mean time can you try and find out where and what bait. Even I will do some snooping around.

for magur i use insect lervae, like eggs of small ants, it works like wonder, try it, take a fine thread, wrap around hook surrounded by eggs...
