Hi,

Last year I had a chance to go out and fish for some trout in the Nilgiris. A pity the conditions were awful on my first trip, it started to pour at 6am and continued for the whole day. Later the wind picked up and it became difficult to stand as the wind howled and screeched through the valley. Forget about trying to cast a Mepps size 0.
However on my next trip the conditions were much better and we had a few small rainbow trout from the stream (below the bridge) that joins the Avalanche dam/lake. A pity it was a hot day and the bites tapered off early. Atleast we caught a couple.
I heard this bit is doing really well now with 6 fish over the 1 kilo mark being caught in the last couple of weeks.I was also told it'll do pretty well for about another month.
Below are pictures of the small stream and a rainbow.

Regards,
Mighty Marlin.

Hi,
Just a note to let you know that this season the Forest Department is not allowing any fishing along the river leading to Avalanche lake, and any one caught is fined and the incident is mentioned in the papers( this despite a valid fishing licence.) Last year there was a big fight between the Staff College Anglers Club and the forest Department, and this year the DFO is adament. One can now fish for trout in Avalanche where the lake touches the private tea gardens of small growers, and almost no bites take place there. Talks are on to get Forest permission for fishing along the Avalanch river next season.
Regards

Hi,

I know about this development. A real pity.

Hi Mighty Marlin
Beutiful stream really. Thats the pleasure of trout fishing; you do it in heavens. By the way, does the rainbow breed in the wild in Nilgiris? And are there any brownies also in those waters?
Cheers
Sualeh

There is a hatchery upstream from where the photo was taken , which is now in a state of disuse, so one can say that the rainbow trout now breed in the wild. The forest department creates problims for the fisheries department when they want to go to the hatchery established about 100 years ago. In the British days several varieties of trout were bred, but only the rainbow was successful here.
