Hi everyone,

I am looking for any information on targeting GTs in southern India (preferably the East Coast) and the Andamans.

If someone has chased these fish with flies, that's even better.

Where might I go looking for GTs? And when? Tides? Months?

My background is in trout, salmon, and steelhead, though I have a bit of bonefishing experience. I really don't know much about these bad boys of the salt.

Thanks,
Alex

alex . hi ... gts of flies will be crazy... u may need high end tibor 12+weight rods and tibor hign end reels with a real good drag and loads of backing..

intermediate tropical fly line and clouser minnow patterns for fish under the surface and floating tropical fly line with popper flies for surface.. needless to say the hooks leader and tippets should be heavy duty.

all in all its a very expensive affair.. i havent gone there yet .. it'll a long way off for me.. but i have friends who have been there ,done that...

andamans and the west coast.. konkan region would be good.... but ..we're nearing the monsoons ... so i suggest u try around sept oct onwards...

hope the rest of the chaps give u better info....

Hi maruthu and Binu,

Come on, need your reply on this.

hello Alex,

I have seen some GT's action in royapuram fishing harbour which is in north chennai. But it was some months back.

I have no idea about fly fishing.

let's plan for a meet and discuss. Where do you stay in Chennai?

Ravinp is an expert here in chennai. Hope he can also give some information about it.

Salmonmani

There are couple of places where you can catch those bastages.

I would suggest you to fish the beach though. Look for river mouths and clear water.
I am pretty sure you can do pretty well on those 3-6 pounders (the locals catch 'em with worms).
I am a beginner to fly fishing and would rather do plugging for big GTs instead of fly fishing with a 12wt gear.

Try to target the smaller guys with an 8wt or a 9wt fly gear.
But, the surf is windy and rough for the most part even for pluging. So you might have to fight with the conditions.

I am not sure how you are going to fly fish with all those kids standing behind you.
That is something I would like to learn when I get back :)
Once you are all set to go, let me know and I will PM you some locations.

BTW, there are Barracudas and Barramundi, which can be caught on fly as well.

Cheers,
Maruthu

Thanks for the information, everyone. I'll keep posting here as I have more questions, or if I find some fish!

I've heard of it being done - with adult GT's.
From what I remember the guys fished in pairs one casting a popper without hooks to get the fish up and agressive and the other dropping a fly over them and ripping like crazy.
All I'll say is if you're going to try it, wear a glove for palming the spool.

Babies should't be to difficult, just find you fish and have at them with a deciever or a popper ripped quickly.

Wow guys a dream come true to see a different section on fly fishing. Its been three years since I have been enjoying it out here In Oman mainly with small trevally. one spot snapper, small hamour, seema and a few other shore species in and around the city of muscat. The big bream, emperor fish & permits are down south. Best months out here are from OCT until MAR. Will be out this afternoon fishing an incoming tide. Have located a small private beach that seems to hold some large resident breams. Lets see how it goes with size 4 cluouser minnows. Caught around six one spot snapper yesterday on an incoming tide. No camera as the family in india on vacation with the camera. I did post two stories around two years ago. Maybe these can be moved to this section. Will def upload pictures and stories as flyfish almost every weekend out here. GT's are out here in northern Oman. Jeen uploaded some great pictures on these giants. Anyone welcome to stay with me if coming to Oman.
