You guys already have problems enough with African catfish and tilapia loose in your waters so I was astonished to walk into a little aquatics shop and find them selling baby Aligator Gar, Surubim Catfish, Oscars, Arapima (AKA Saratoga) and Piranas.

Now some of these species have the potential to be great fun on a line but they also have the potential to do great damage to native ecosystems.

Are there no controls at all on what can br bought, sold, moved about and released into the wild in India ? :(

eljefe.

The Aligator Gar and Surubim were on sale in Chennai but I've seen all the others in both Chennai and Goa.
Surubim in particular are a major predator in South America and could easilly push Wallago Attu out of it's rather precarious ecological niche as well as competing with Mahseer.
What next. Peackock bass, Nile Perch and Pyara ?

My mistake. Arapiama should have read Arowana (Saratoga should have been the giveaway) but the Gar was definatly a north American Gar - Alligator or one of it's close relatives.

Saratoga was the give away, no worries Ken, I knew a guy who was trying to impress a few women (my wife included) with his profound knowledge of ichthyology and of all things calls a Blue Marlin an “Arowana” in my presence.
