Dear Anglers.

We have already discussed the oil spill and the chemical hazards caused by the collision of two merchant ships of Mumbai coast.

I would love to put forward a proposal that from this weekend (every Sunday) we anglers join and decide place where we can go and do our lil bit to clean up the waste.

Please, lets do it. Who can understand the importance of a healthy marine eco system better than a angler?

Lets decide the place that is affected and lets do it. Please [smilie=thumbup.gif]

Excellent! This is an idea that will actually make a difference. Please join up. And thanks in advance.

The next time I am in Mumbai I will join you guys instead of going to Powai. And in any case the fish there just don't like me.

Unfortunately, I am working on Sundays afternoon. I can join from early morning to noon from next Sunday. I can manage Saturdays better.
Santosh, you have taken a great initiative.

Since last one week, I was doing (Beside work) only two things, designing, arranging and balancing my Silver Carp/ Bighead Rig and dreaming about a huge catch from dam side of Powai. You know how much I am tied with my work now a days and I am in desperate need to do some fishing, but the initiative you have taken is far more important. Lets do it mate. We from angler community owe too much to mother nature and lets make a contribution and do our own bit.

Lets decide a place, date and methodology on ASAP basis. I am all for this Sunday and lets do it.

Its pay back time guys.

I received a call this afternoon from DNA and they are eager to cover the clean up drive by Anglers.

I believe there are more than 5 Mumbai anglers on this forum.

The plan was that Myself, Santosh and Rajat will meet on 29th and go to Irangal Rocks to asses the condition, do a bit of cleanup and formalize an action plan for the next Sunday.

Unfortunately, due to heavy rains, Santosh and Rajat were not able to join me. I took my driver and went alone and the condition of our shore is, least to say, pathetic. The amount of plastic littered is unbelievable. Fortunately there is no oil there.

Did some cleanup and dumped the trash in a BMC bin near Malvany. Man this sand coated plastic is heavy.

For next Sunday I suggest Velenkany Church as it connected by road.

Gret Alibhai.

Should have called me, I would have joined you.
Yes the plastics are heavy and all around the place. Yesterday was at Patwadi and every cast resulted in a Plastic Bag.

The area is not affected by the OIL but the local dumping of plastic bags is a serious mess around our coastline.

This may be due to some festival that we had in recent days wherein locals offer flowers and coconut to the sea.

Let’s join and do our bit next Sunday.

For last two days I am trying to get in touch with the concerned person at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) who are carrying out bioremediation of Oil.

Was wondering if we could join them as volunteers in collecting the slick that has settled on the beaches and dump it in pits that have been created for treatment with bacteria powder.

Guys, your inputs...

Weather was not friendly and trying to threaten us to abandon our task by pouring heavy rain in the morning. Yet we decided to go ahead and complete the task as decided.

Sanju, Santosh and I reached Erangle rocks on Sunday morning and the rain stopped. Feels like Mother Nature wanted us to see the disaster caused by humans.

We took a long walk to reach the intended destination  . We were shocked to see the waste materials spreader all around and the oil cakes formed around the corner. The mangroves covered with plastic cover. There was oil floating on the surface. We knew we three guys will never be able to clean the mess.

We tried our best and collected almost 45kg of waste materials from the surface. It was tough to get the garbage bag to the Beach where there was the BMC Garbage collection box.

The bags were so slippery due to the oil that Santosh and Sanju had a real tough time caring them.

If this continues then the day is not too far when we will have to fish in our home aquarium or polish and keep angling equipment as vintage stuffs for our children’s to admire their use.

We require more anglers to come ahead in this noble cause and do their bit. It is just three hours that you have to give. The nature has given us so much cant we try and do little bit so that our children’s can enjoy angling when they grow.

Guys please think about it, we need more anglers to come ahead. I am sure there are more that couple of anglers in Mumbai.

Well done mates. [smilie=hellyeah.gif]

A job well done. These gestures from within the angling community will surly help in bringing the pathetic condition of our shores to some lime light and I am sure, many others will also join hands and address the problem effectively.

At lest, 4 sq. Mtr. area of our shore is clean now, thanks to this initiative. More hands and more area will be clean.

Respect to you guys.

I sincerely hope more people will join in the future.

There's no point in bitching about the situation as there are already a million and more people doing the same and it will not make a difference just talking about it, however if just a handful of these people do something about it, THAT would make the difference... GRC

If all members on IA take the above advice and start acting, I am sure we will be able to protect and preserve whatever little is left for our future generations.

Lakes, rivers, or your favourite fishing hole, just give an hour of your fishing time to collect some trash around it. Something is better than nothing.
