choosing a rod depends on many factors, the weight of lures.your casting style if using light lures single handed is fine, and the compatibility of your reel, whether you prefer a two piece or telescopic,go around and try someone else s rod and hopefully youll be able to ,make up your mind

On a serious note.

1. hold the rod at the reel just above the seat of the reel. (in your right hand if you are a 'rightie')
2. hold the line with your index finger.
3. open the bale arm (keep holding the line with your index finger)
4. swing the rod back and then to the fornt.
5. release the line by pointing with your index finger (the one that was holding the line)

easier said then done but that's the basics. there are some great videos available on the net. do a yahoo video search. i'll try and find a few links for you.

Cheers mate

PS never touch the old monk stuff myself. stick to vino and beer
