As a feeler, how many of you think having an online tackle shop in India selling quality products, is a good idea? Will it work out? Let's hear your suggestions.

Keep the prices down and it will fly. Best of luck mate. It's badly needed.

How much more than US retail prices would our Indian anglers be willing to pay for quality stuff? I mean value for money gear and not fancy stuff. One would have to factor in shipping and customs as well.

i normally end up paying about 30% more than the site's listed price. mumbai is about 50% more than listed prices but you can bargain if you are buying quantity.

Maybe you should get a confirmed big order (made up of many smaller order... like mine) and do one shipment once every month. Just a thought.

Bops, confirmed big order will help cut down the cost of shipping if imported as CIF (Airport to Airport) shipment. DTD shipments by courier would cost much more. (total weight should be more than 10 Kg. or much better if more than 25 Kg).

If ordering from Singapore, sea shipment should be preferred as the transit time is less and will be a huge saving.

The difference in shipping cost should make the product much cheaper, lets say as much as 20 to 30 % or more..

regards,

Santosh

Thanks for the info Santosh. Do you have much experience with importing foreign products? How long does a sea shipment from Singapore take to get here?

hi bops,

I m more into exports than importing, but can help with all information related imports & shipping.

Re. Transit time: Its less than a week from singapore to Mumbai. Don't know the exact freight but the cost of sea shipping is very low from singapore. , mum-sing sea freight per CBM is 0.

Clearing agent cost will be min. INR 5000 (larger the order, less the % of cost on shipping & custom clearing.)

On a decent size order (1000 - 2000 USD) , add another 20 % for all other expenses like duty, clearance,....excluding freight.

I noticed that some members chose Bad in the poll. Can you guys post, why you think this is a bad idea? Any input will be appreciated.

For those following this thread, IA will be able to offer Tackle and lures at very close to MRP soon.

Surley the few who voted bad idea clicked the wrong button!
How can more tackle shops be bad, wherever in the world they are. An online tackle emporium for India, give the man a medal.

Bops,

Thats the best thing I have heard all this year...

A small premium is justified ...25% seems reasonable.

But how will U sell ? A regular tackle shop ..or...stock at home..
There are things like registered shop...tax...etc... in the first.. :(
And the home minister  in the second.

I know the pain of getting stuff thru friends who travel.

Firstly they get conned as the sellers realise that they know JACK about fishing eqpt ... and push them bargains

And then they end up buying some korean/chinese kit ...thinking they were doing me a favour.... And I could only smile and accept.

Hi Jude

The shop will be an online shop and it will also cater to outdoor products which will be useful to us anglers.

A great idea Bops. I'm gonna be customer No.1. Go for it! But do keep the prices down. 25% + VAT is good deal.

Have you considered getting in some good used gear too? Especially the more expensive stuff.

Yeah ,Bops.

Sounds great !!! When does this happen ??
I am in the setup mode now.

Would there be exchange schemes, which could give learners possibilities of picking up good used gear ??

Hi Bops,

Having an online store will be very much usefull and handy for the angler's point of view. Yes, I will be a customer for sure.
From a buissiness point of view there are several other things considered like the following.

1. Knowing how much of fishing stuff is beeing imported to India and what they are and their value. Is it possible to get this information from anywhere?

2. Marketing, like pasting an Advertisement sticker to the online store on the fishing packages imported, through customs or with the help of the parcel service. I am not sure if this is possible.

3. Having the right stuff in the store and an intense study on what is the target species in India (mostly sought after) and how many people are targetting them and what will be the go to gear for it.

Ex: If some one from Chennai says "I dont know how to start with and suggest me a gear...". In my opinion, a 9' tica dolphin spinning rod paired with a Penn 7500 SS loaded with 20 lb mono will do the job for Surf, Jetty, may be light duty boat gear. May be I am wrong, but this is just for an example. In this case that person might go with what solves his need and a readily available option, than looking into confusing, complex, expensive and an option with delay in importing stuff.

Thanks,
Maruthu

Hi LF

Thanks for your inputs. One off combos as you suggest is a very expensive option since the price benefit that bulk purchasing offers is lost.

For specific combos, anglers are better off ordering stuff on their own.

I have posted some stuff under the Outdoor gear Shoppe, have a look.

Bops,

That was just an example that I could think off. There will be better options that could have price benefits.
Can you please let me know on how to navigate to the Outdoor gear Shoppe.

Thanks,
Maruthu

Checked the items in the online store, and the rates are a great deal. Can't go wrong with that price.

Thanks,
