Hi Scott,
thanks for you reply. You have beautifully explained. I have a simple coil feeder. There is no extra weight except the coil. Can you tell me the minimum weight require..... :?: Second thing is what should be the cork pop up size....10mm or 20mm :?: .

Regards,

Pradeep.

Hi Shah747,
thanks for your reply. I know Baitcasting reel. Is Bait runner reel different from Baitcasting :?: But I will keep one graphite rod which is very much sensitive as per your suggestion.

Regards,

Pradeep.

Hi Pradeep,

your set-up depends on your target fish and their expected size. So to answer your question about pop up size i would say the following.

If you use a 10mm popup then you will not only catch smaller fish but also the larger ones. With a 20mm bait you exclude yourself from catching the smaller fish. If it is your intention to target larger specimens then fish a bigger bait. Usually if I want to target a big carp and avoid other species and smaller carp I will use a double 20mm boilie or even move up to a 30mm bait.

And as for your feeder weight...

If you are using a very stiff mix on the feeder which doesn't easily fall off then just this weight will be enough to make sure the 'bolt rig' effect works correctly.

But should you want to catch MORE fish?....you want to use a fluffier groundbait that will start to break down easily after the feeder has been cast and settled on the bottom. As the fish feed on the bait it will break down and particles will cloud the water in the area and in turn attract other fish (which will not really happen with a very sticky stiff mix that stays attached to the feeder). The trick is to get the mix just right so you can cast but also be certain that the bait has left the feeder when you reel back in. You want to be ideally casting to the same spot every time to build the attraction in that area over a number of hours.

With this method the bait might have already been dislodged from the feeder when the fish eats it so you need an additional weight on the feeder to provide the bolt rig effect properly. This weight might vary from 1 oz/28g for small fish with small hooks to 2 or 3 oz if you are using bigger baits and targeting bigger fish.

Here are a couple of pics of weighted 'method' feeders but you can easily modify your coil feeder by adding some lead. If the 'Method' as its called in Europe is used correctly it will catch you many fish but you must pay particular attention to the consistency of the groundbait, hookbait, hair length, trace length etc. Do tests over time and fine tune it for your area and find out exactly what works. And don't think you always have to use a pop-up. Some days a bottom bait will work better!

And i've included a couple of pics of reels.

here is a baitcaster which is typically mostly used for freshwater lure fishing

and a bait runner which as Shah says has a few different applications but is very popular in carp bolt rigging because you need a reel which can freely give line when the fish hooks itself and also be able to engage the gears and start playing the fish on a normal drag setting quickly. Before baitrunners were invented you simply had to fish with a loose drag and tighten it after the bite (which is not ideal) or fish with the line clipped up and the bail arm open. After the bite the bail could be closed and you would play the fish on the normal drag (also not very effective way to fish)

Hope this helps, all the best, Scott

In most pass lakes now a days sattu is used extensively. I am thinking of using sattu as feeder bait as most fishes are familiar with sattu and if this bait is made properly it will dissolve when casted creating a big cloud of particles.

Hi Scott,
thanks again for your reply. I am sorry I couldn't reply soon. I am very much impressed with your detail knowledge on fishing. I have got an overall picture of the feeder fishing method without going to the river. You have explained beautifully :-) .

Regards,

Pradeep.

Hi Arefin, No worries mate. I'm not on the forum much any more but try to have a look occasionally. I really like to be able to offer some advice when I can. I know from feedback some of this advice has helped some guys become better anglers and that means a lot to me :)

all the best, Scott
