Hi guys,

I have never done surf /sea fishing before in my life. I would be going to Goa in October end.Its a family trip. So mostly I would be around Baga, calangut , dona paula , candolin beaches. I do have some 10ft , 11ft rods and compatible reels.

I seek advise on : -

1> where from I can do the surf fishing.(my idea of surf fishing is to attach a bait(mullet, sardine) and cast with a heavy weight to the sea.(as I see in you tube) Please correct me.

2> the type of hooks, rigs, bait and (from where can I get the bait)

3> I have a Tilsan big barra, laser pro , yo-zuri pinns minnow (I had purchased them a year back reading forum posting only.(But really never opened them) . Can they would be useful there in Goa.

Pardon me as I know I have asked many questions. Any suggestion from you guys would be highly appreciable.
As I consider myself zero in this field.

Go through google maps and zero in on a potential fishing spot which is closer to your stay.

Ans 1) Yes you are right. The 10 and 11 ft are good enough for surf fishing. Use a 7-8 ft rod for spinning lures. Try and use wire leader or stronger mono leaders as there are fair chances you will lose your lures on rocks and barnacles.

Ans 2) Try fish finder and paternoster rigs. Use Sardines (Tail portion of 2 inch) as bait on a 5/0 hook. You can use shrimps/prawns or squid as bait as well. You can ask the local guys where you can get you bait from, usually a fish market.

Night fishing could yield good results as well if you in the right place. Try live baiting and spinning lures.

Fish you can expect:
Barramundi - Taken on live bait, dead bead, slash bait (Lures) and even poppers.
Mangrove Jacks - Taken on live bait, dead bead, slash bait (Lures).
Groupers - Taken on live bait, dead bead, slash bait (Lures)
Rays - Taken on live bait, dead bead.

Commoners - Breams, Cudas, etc.

Priceless Catch: Threadfin Salmon :p

October is a right time. There are fishing charters in Dona Paula. Sorry but do not have their contact.

Hope this helps.

Hi teritex,

God bless you.
Thanks a ton for your precious information.
I have the wire leader and 7 , 8 feet rods with me.
The only way left would be finding the exact spot and try my luck there.

I'm there this weekend.
Not sure if I'll be fishing considering the weather.
Even if I did, then it will be with 8# test tackle.
I will be in Palolem beach and will update either way.

Cheers, Maruthu

hi i would suggest you fish with live bait at dona paula without the extra weight just live bait, as i fish there frequent, now days we are catching squids at the jetty you might also get to see entier jetty sprayed with ink, fish at reis magos next to light house, i got a good bite this saturday night must be of grouper ran in the rocks, was unable to pull it out, but later in the night at around 2am caught 6 squids , as they put halogen lights due to ganesh chaturti

I'm trying to figure out what this meant? the squids were attracted to the halogen bulbs? It sounds more like te aqids were celebrating ganesh chaturthi and had put the halogen bulbs.....

Omesh

squids get attarcted to lights, since people were submerging ganesh idols near light house they put big cans of light facing the water so squids were comming in huge numbers there. as for dona paula there is a light tower which attracts the squids.

that bat island and grande island is a paradise for fishing there are some realy big groupers there , some of the local charter guys say there is 1 grouper of around 60kg +, if you go near these islands do bottom fishing with live prawns good amoung of parrot fish you will catch, and if you use gulp spray on dead bait you will catch even more fishesh :D
