So, my question is why barra at night in India? We do not fish at night in
Australia because of the danger from the crocodiles and the very wild locale.

@ mailme Mario

Yes, Mario, plastics = rubber shads.

By the way, why do you fish for barra at night? Work issues or do the barra come closer to shore at night to feed ?

Regards,
Kingfish

Barramundi have excellent night vision and this is when they come into shallow water to hit the baitfish. Night fishing simply increases your chances.
Lure fishing for barra at night is practiced in northern Australia but only from safe locations such as the harbour wall on the Endeavour River at Cooktown.

One learns something new everyday !

Most of the anglers who fish at night in the safer areas in the lower Eastern States ( New South Wales and Victoria) of Australia target jewfish from the shore or the boat, with the sharks being a by-catch.

By safer areas, I mean that it is crocodile free.

Hi Kingfish,

Are you going to fishing just from the shore or have access to a boat. Try Broome jetty (you need some method to land big fish as water is a long way down) and Gantheaume point as that is another proven spot. There are a few other land based spots but I think you might be hard pushed to actually target MJs there. Rather you should take a range of lures, poppers, shallow divers, deeper divers and shads and try a range of lure as there is a large variety of species that might take the bait. Best chance of an MJ is in the Dampier creek along with queenies and trevs, but without a boat only a few places that can be accessed.

Good luck, it will interesting to see what you catch..

all the best, Scott

Hello Scott,

Thank you for the information.

Actually, I am going to the Eco Beach resort which is about 100+ kms
from Broome.

There will be shore and boat fishing for other species without specifically
targeting MJs.

However, on one occasion, we are going to fish Jacks' Creek which supports
a good number of MJs....this is where I wish to concentrate on that one
species and need help to better my chances of success.

Regards,
Kingfish

We seem to be drifting away from the subject.

It is a shame that not one individual from the forum has given a name of their go to lure for catching mangrove jacks.Lots of generalizations.

Those who are catching them are playing their cards very close to their
chests, for whatever reasons.

Had I put this request on an Aussie forum, I would have received perhaps
20 lure choices by now.

As I said, it is a shame.

Generic "types" are probably of more use to you in fairness.
The Aussie lure market is so centered on local brands that specific lure suggestions night be difficult or impossible to source.
Here in the UK, lures by Fox, Savage Gear etc are popular but you would struggle to find them in Aus just as you would struggle to source US offerings from the Pradco stable - except of course for the ubiquitous "Gold Bomber".

You may be right, Ken.

However, I know that a lot of the forum anglers use Aussie lures by
Halco/ RMG ( I have even arranged for some of them to order these!)
and yet nothing...!

Australian tackle shops now carry a wider variety of lures and one may,of course, easily order from overseas via the Internet.

Anyhow, I will take your and others' advice and carry an assortment with me and then report on which ones performed (and which ones did not).

The only downside is that it will cause excess baggage unnecessarily and some of the feeder airlines are stingy on how much you may carry.

Regards,
Kingfish

In my opinion,........... as far as MJ's are concerned, I do not think they go for specific type of lures. I have caught them on Rapala, CC, Halco, poppers, and even home made cycle pedal lures and a whole lot of other lures. When they are feeding they almost about hit anything that is moving.

I also have noted that MJ's do not live in open waters. They are around rocks, reef, roots and so on. They invariably strike (may be a 1 % exception) very closer to your feet, as you are about to remove the lure out of the water. Their tendency is to run straight into the rocks once they are hooked. Hence a tight drag becomes very essential. For a MJ of about 2 to 3 kgs, it is the initial 2 minutes fight and then they succumb easily.
