Lest anyone be accused of being a racist and not politically correct,
I wish to clarify that " jewfish " is actually an abbreviation .
The fish is actually named "jewelfish" , for two reasons:
1. The colour of the fish is so silvery and shiny, especially in the
sunlight, that it sparkles like a jewel.
2. The second and more intriguing reason is that inside the head cavity of
the fish, there are two hard bony ,small sized "jewels"!
These are taken out by the knowledgeable anglers as trophies.
Apparently, in the light these sparkle just like jewels, hence the name
For the fish!
Oh, by the way, apart from dmelloralf no one has responded
whether the silver jewfish (reference the picture I have posted) is found in India?
