Catching a big sly carp is always a serious business and it becomes even grave when the conditions are at its worst. Like all of you, who have indulged in the funny world of Carp fishing, I too have come to realize that there are no set patterns or methods to apply and one has to constantly upgrade the techniques and methods to outwit these wily creatures.

After the initial success, at the end of our mission impossible, successfully targeting the biggest and shyest of all Indian Carp, The Catla, I too, like a fool assumed that I have mastered the technique to catch these fishes and started believing it as an easy game.

After the initial glory, in came the rude shock of nil catches. The initial absences of bites were surely due to non feeding fishes. Subsequent failures where attributed to a million causes. Spurred by the previous success, the confidence was still there that catching these fishes was not a tough job. Surely we will land them in our next trip.

When the next and the next and subsequent trips failed to produce any fish, first the confidence was dented and then gradually the malady of self doubt took over. Will I ever be able to catch a fish again?

Many a plan were made while tossing and turning in half sleep, to the annoyance of wife, and promptly executed without even a single bite. My rig was balanced to perfection, the hooks were sharp as they can be, the bait was made with a ritual like precision, the ground baiting was done with a religious timetable, big fishes rolled over my ground bait regularly but still no bite.

It was when the self doubt was turning into depression, in came Santo, the good friend he is, with a simple advice. His take was that due to de silting process carried out outside the bay area of Powai, the muck have accumulated in front of our machan and fishes were not going down on our bait. Redevelopment of the spot was the simple solution to all our problem.

Immediately abandoning all our fishing, we raked the spots till our arm ached and in the process removed amazing quantity of plastic and debris from the bed. Next few weekends were also devoted to same process and satisfied by these efforts; we once again started our fishing. The modified plans and innovations were once again put to test and the results where phenomenal. Here are few of the notable fishes we landed for all of you to admire.

Seasons First Catla 38.5 lbs.

Congratz on the fine catches to both of you .

Ali Bhai,

I am having a peculiar problem here... I go to fish at a regular lake, there are catla rohu, mirgal...... Have been going for 6-7 weeks regularly and have been following the recipe for ground bait, feeder bait as discussed with you.
Now the problem is there are huge ones (may be 10-20 lbs,) who jump and roll over the ground baited area and surrounding places.
The set up i am using are as follows:
1. Feeder with pop up (pop -up boilies home made--floats very well, retains smell for 2-3 hrs)
2. Feeder with hook bait (bread and chana recipe)
3. Bolt rig with hook bait.

The problem now is am not able to hook big ones, caught around 1-1.5lbsones.

What is that which should be corrected?

Please suggest......

Best regards,
Vijay

Will you post the photo of your setup so I can advice you accordingly.

Thank you everyone for your kind comment.

Kanwar, your contact no. ASAP please

Maneesh, The amount of plastic and derbies of plastic lying on the bed of Powai is beyond description. It is sad to see more and more garbage dumped inside the lake on a daily basis.

Regards,

Ali.

Further to above, Just for information, if you go through the IGFA world record, the record for catla, under all tackle categories is in the name of Mr. Jean-Francois Helias and it is only 15.33 Kg (33lb 07 oz) so technically 3 Catlas out of the four above are word record. As for as this forum goes, our very own Santosh is the present word record holder at 46 lbs !!

Santy, a grand party is in order..

Regards,

Ali.

Hi Ali, Santosh,

That was a great treat to the eyes.
Some serious fishing.
Congrats.

If you asked me to vote for the best catch, eyes closed I will go for the 11lb Rohu. Just imagine, a 11 lb Rohu ON A 5LB LINE. That's something excellent. sure must have enjoyed the fight to the maximum.

46 lb Catla.................That sure is a monster of a fish.

Ravi

These catches, you see here, are only a tiny reflection of Powai,s actual potential. If you go through the record book of Catches, you will be amazed to see the the log book painted with phenomenal catches against the name of one Javed Ansari. (His best being some 45 fishes in a day of fishing, including 7 Catlas of 15-25 Kg) . A true master of carp fishing. :P

The amount of knowledge base regarding the Indian carp, specially ground baiting, amongst the members of Powai is really phenomenal and I rate Javed best of all.

If you were an old timer and happen to visit Powai now, you will find Powai a changed place. It is evolving into a world class Carp fishing destination, thanks to guy like Javed and effort of many other members.

Regards,

Ali. :P

Fantastic report Ali Bhai... We all appreciate the effort of Powai Anglers like You and Javed Ansari, keep continuing the efforts toward changing it into the world class angling destination...

and congratulation to Powai gang for bagging the record catlas, when will they be registered in IGFA? and do we have our own Indian record organization?

Thanks and Regards
Arish!

If ever there is a graveyard for anglers, it will be Powai lake.

Many a mortals have considered it to be a fishing heaven having seen the enormous fish that call it home. Anglers from all corners of the world have fished here, from master carp anglers of Bong land to carp specialist from Europe.

Carp fishing is tough as they say, fishing in Powai will put you in depression.
