In a front drag spinning reel does the smoothness of drag depend solely on the quality of washers incorporated in the spool or does the mechanism of the reel also play a part ?

I have 2 different models Of Daiwa reels - Regal and Theory. The Regal has a single ball bearing while the Theory has three. Both use similar spools - even the part numbers of the drag system are the same. Yet the Theory has an infinitely smooth drag at any setting while the Regal invariably gives me a jerky drag at higher settings.

Is this an inherent characteristic of the reel or do the drag washers of the Regal need overhauling ?

It's all down to the spool and the line roller.
As the shaft supporting the spool on a spinning reel doesn't revolve, the rest of the reels mechanism plays no part in the drag.

Lots of things could be afecting your Regal - wear, dirt, salt etc.

Thanks Ken - A clear and concise reply ... as always !
Will try and clean out the drag washers and the line roller - or else time to retire the Regal, I guess.

As this question has come up....
please let me know about the effect of oil on the washers (which type is preferred)
and what if i put more oil??? is it going to become extra smooth or i will loose my drag because of less friction???
thanks in advance

Just to complete this thread: I disassembled the drag washers and cleaned them as also the line roller. The drag works like a charm now - supersmooth at all settings.
And Heliox - incidently I had referred to the same site you have mentioned !!
