Look at that tail. I can only imagine the power it generates.

Great going Alibhai. Looks like the fish in Powai only come out when I leave.

Ken,

Catching these Catla of Powai is sort of a ritual which requires lot of time and effort. If you are serious about catching one of them, come for at least three days and be prepared to fish for at least 24 hrs non stop.

Incidentally this fish was landed after 50 hours of effort, in part by santo and me.

Still there is no guaranty that you will land one.

Regards,

Ali.

Hi Guys,

The weather over the weekend changed completely, after some showers early in the week there was no rain for 4 days and it was very hot & humid. Friday night I and Sanjay reached the lake after spending 24hrs we managed some small fish including one mangur by Sanjay. On Saturday afternoon we decided to make it a 36 hr non-stop fishing but due to extreme exhaustion we decided to leave the lake midnight on Saturday. There was some feeding on Saturday till late in the afternoon but no hook-ups. Which now I believe was due to 3x hooks (owner & laser sharp) the hooks were very sharp but were thick wire. Later I and Ali went fishing. I did some feeder balancing and placement of hair rig in the fish tank kept at the club. The fish were feeding on the feeder but still no hook ups. In meanwhile Ali caught a beauty of 26 lb Catla. Looking at the action Ali suggested that I change my rig with some more modifications. The hooks were replaced with fine wire size 6 hooks (with a small cork ball) I use these hooks to catch tilapias and small mrigal. The feeder were casted again. Ali got his second fish hooked but after a good run he lost it. After 10 mins I hooked another one, the first run was lightning and the fish ripped almost half the line on my reel, and the fish just refused to give up, once it was close to the machan it was hell bent to go under it and the fight was back breaking... 23 LB (10.5 KG) Catla :D . We lost another three fish. Including hook-ups to me and Ali at the same time. Amazing day of fishing. However this was about 60 hr effort in parts by Me, Sanjay, Babloo bhai & Ali.

No one in the lake is catching any decent fish since it's an offseason but in last 30 days or so we have landed 7 catla's all above 20 Lb and lost about 8 to 10. Apart form that, few mrigals, Kalabose & Mangurs. We all are waiting with lot of excitement for the lake to overflow that is when the real season starts. Keep an eye on MI for some big rohus, Hybrids, mrigal and the 50 LB CATLA..

WOW! Way to go guys.

Those are real big fish. I can only imagine the momentum they generate. Reel crunching I am sure.

Got to get me one of them.

Ali bhai - as I had told you earlier... Very beautiful fish indeed.. Even though they are shorter than the catlas caught in these parts, the girth of the fish is much larger than their Kolkata cousins... You have been feeding them well.. Congrats on your catches and i wish you the very best for the 50lber..

Tight Lines,
GRC

Great catches Ali Bhai & Santo Bhai. Slow down, at this rate u guys will wipe out the Catla population. If I were the Head Catla of Powai, I would seriously think of carrying out a inhouse check if there were any spies amongst them, leaking out their feeding methods to you guys.

Regards
Cavalier.

Hi Ali, Santosh

It is hard to get a catla to bite your bait............and to get hooked on.
You guys, i am sure, have mastered the art of it. Never an understatement if i say..... you guys are the experts in Catla.
Such sized catla I have seen only being caught on nets.
Wonderful work lads. Keep it up. (teach me the secret of catching them [smilie=wink.gif])
Congrats and best of luck for bigger ones.

Ravi

Thanks Guy's,

Fishing for catla is like a Poisson.. although I love saltwater fishing, catching a catla is ultimate thrill. From making the perfect bait to landing the brute on size 6 hooks. The runs these fishes give is second to none. I have been bitten by the catla bug, 24 to 72 hrs of fishing this weekend. red bull, AD and stuff. Till I get my 37 lb catla..
Finished making the feeder massala, (channa, rice, sugar, cinnamon).. balancing and rebalancing the rig.. outsmart the wittiest carp.. that is angling at it’s best.

Santosh

Hi Ali,

Good to hear the hooks made it to you in good time.. :D I've got my eyes open for some stronger models as although the ones I sent are pretty good i'm sure something more sturdy is available for your ercord catla. I'll let you know what i find..till then good luck with your search.

i'm off this weekend after big carp in a large lake nearby where i live. Its around 60acres in size and holds about 80 fish..which means its hard going but apparently the fish run up to 20kg plus so the rewards are there. its a truly stunning place and worth spending the time there regardless of whether i catch. Some of the original carp brought to britain reside in the lake so it's got a good history with some potential memorable catches for those who put the effort in!! i'm off now to feed teh beauties in rediness for the weekend! will report back soon! :D scott

Hi guys.
Take a look at the FOX SERIES 2XS CARP HOOKS if you need something compact but tough - recomended by a carpie mate.

Best of luck with your carp hunt Scott. The chub and perch on the Severn are on the chew (I've had a couple of dozen on each of the last two after work sessions that I've put in) but the pike really don't seem to be moving at the moment - assuming they haven't all been taken out with set lines.....

Best of luck Scott and I am sure you will land something good.

Ken, I have tried Fox 2x carp hooks and they are fabulous. In fact my first two Catlas of this season were landed on the same hooks but after seeing Korda Hybrid wide gap hooks, I think they will perform much better for the type of setup I am using. Lets see if I can increase hookup percentage by using these hooks. I will surely report back.

Regards,

Ali. :P

one of my dream came true
Let me first tell all you guys this would have not been possible but for my guru and dear friend Ali.

Ali I really owe my catch to you and your constant teaching and support'

Last few months had been pure dud for me as far as the fishing goes not only bad luck but as if some thing major had gone wrong I was catching almost next to nothing in Powai as well as in sea. Not that i didn't catching anything but apart from couple of sand sharks, few groupers and tons of cat fish there was nothing worth mentioning in this season. Also the fact that I had no time for fishing almost for four months from November onwards. one after one personal problems and work pressure, all in all basically duh!!!.

The fishes some how kept on eluding me on couple of trips of sea fishing which I managed in between apart from couple of catches as I mentioned

To top it all this summer and till now Powai was almost a nightmare for me whole summer, apart from some occasional Mangur and small Mirgal all i caught was the " Gobis"

The rains started and my mates(Ali and Santosh) made history in Powai catching Katla's of record sizes by hooking them properly in mouth . I was overjoyed (a bit jealous  ) but little bit frustrated . Ali landed up home one day to explain and teach me how to balance my feeder rig for Katla and also to give me some pep talk. I decided to give it a try and for couple of occasion went to Powai to try my new rig but yet no luck also the time I was putting was not enough.

Today I decided to give some more time and follow the age old mantra of patience (Which lately I was in fault of loosing very soon) .

Me and Bablu Bhai (My dear fishing partner for a very long time now) landed up around 11 o clock at the club. We thought we are again late, but not loosing the hope we set up quickly and the old game of wait and see began . Today was a mysterious day by all means in Powai, from morning till evening 5.30PM there was not bite and no bite means no bites nothing the goli rod float did not even move once in all that time . The feeder too was absolutely still which was even more frustrating as on previous two occasion at least small fishes was biting and I even hooked five decent size Khawli two of them on my feeder rig.

I was almost loosing my patience again Then suddenly the feeder started to show some activity which quickly transformed into a continuous one and I had to replenish my feeder twice, suddenly the feeder gave two solid jerks and my reel screamed "oh my god i had almost forgotten how divine that sound is....' I picked my rod shaking with excitement as Bablu Bhai declared it is a "Katla!! Rajat Bhai and be careful do not hurry it looks like a big one". I too was quite sure that it is some thing big as i felt the pressure on my rod and on my still running reel .

I engaged my reel and started to fight the fish with my heart thumping with adrenalin rush but also I knew I can not yank this fish out no way(patience bugger i said to my self and god let it be a Katla) . It was all what Santosh and Ali have mention in their earlier post , a dream of a 25 min fight with first run of almost 100 yards and then numerous mid and short runs. I finally landed my first ever Katla a beauty of 25Lb fish [smilie=hiya.gif] [smilie=hiya.gif] [smilie=happydance.gif] [smilie=happydance.gif]
