Greetings,

Here is a pic of a fish caught by someone in Chennai from the surf.
Can someone please tell what fish it is and do they frequent the surf?

Thanks,
Maruthu

Hi Maruthu,

That fish I think is a croaker.

Cant really tell from the Pic mate, may be a croaker or a Drum it's just that the snout on both these fish tends to be slightly rounded where as this one is pointed.

Thanks for the input.

Bobby,

If it was a drum, what kind of drum could that be?
I have heard of only red drum and black drum, but far from Chennai ....

Given the size and the relativly shallow body, either the Tiger-toothed croaker (Otolithes ruber) or the Bengal corvina (Daysciaena albida) would be a fair bet - but there are plenty of similar species.

Thanks kenL, as the river mouth in Chennai is about to close I had to know about these guys from the rocks.
May be I can catch some with bait, take good pics and then target them with small lures :-)
