I've seen them used on plugs rather than the usual jigs for some saltwater applications. The idea is to attatch both the plug and the assist hook to a clip and remove the plugs trebles.
Hookup ratio is reduced a little by this but for fish that do a lot of jumping and headshaking, like tarpon and barramundi, the risk of the fish using the lure as a lever to shake free is greatly reduced.
Never tried it myself though and so resisted posting this until the post had sat unasnswered for a week.
