Hi folks

Does any of you have any experience in trapping live shrimp and minnows for use as live bait?

I'm thinking of getting one of these as an experiment.

Hey Bops!

We use minnows and shrimps pretty regularly. And catch them in a very simple way.

What we use is a atta kneading dish (tasalla). Basically a big dish with 3/4 inch sides. Tie a cloth over the whole thing. Make a small hole in the middle of the cloth. Rub some atta around the hole and stick a large chunk of atta inside the pan.

Then put the entire contraption into the water, sprinkling some dry atta on the surface of the water. come back after 15 mins and take out the contraption fast. You'll find lot of minnows inside.

As for shrimp. I have found nothing better than my old butterfly net. I just dredge the weeds and come up with all sorts of goodies including shrimp.

You get live shrimps in goa for Rs. 1.25 each. Works good for bait fishing.

That's pretty reasonable Tathagata, Chennai was more expensive.

this works wonders... have made a home made one slightly larger than the atta plate!!! for shrimp and others, use mosquito netting dredged along the bottom near weeds... you'll get a whole bunch of stuff that way...

Cheers,

Bops,

The best bet is always early morning cast netting fisherfolk on the beaches. We use a cast net which is simple to use with a little practice. The casting net is quite cheap. Here it costs about 100 Dhs ( close to a 1000 rupees.)THe pot with a cloth tied around its mouth with a slit in it is excellent for chilwa and other small fry in the rivers , Ponds & lakes.

U can buy about 30 big shrimps for 50 Rs at a place on the long raibandar road connecting old goa, after 7 pm on an out going tide. and fish excatly on the same spot .. caught snappers upto 12 pounds there on live shrimp. the white variety is much more effective that the red, thou the red stay alive longer. Ken and I picked up a 3 kilo barramundi on live bait at the old goa jetty another interesting spot ..
