While I'm going to get a lot of tongue in cheek replies to this one, whats this forum's experience with hemp seeds in India? Availability, cost, legality, and how-to-use?
I'm afraid, inspite of being a physician, experience is limited to 'book knowledge' only and that too the illegalities  ...and the urine/blood tests to show some one's under influence of...
How come its sold legally in UK as 'failsafe' carp bait? Is the UK hemp something else?

Hemp is legal in many places. It has nothing to do with its wicked cousin.

Hemp is grown in various parts of the world for its fiber. In fact there is a famous chain called Hempest which sells designer stuff.

Coming back to fishing. Never used it but like you have heard lots about how it is the perfect ground bait.

Maybe we should start experimenting with other seeds like bajara, til or even melon seeds.

cheers

Yup thats the stuff Asif. Won't find it growng wild in the south though.
You need to soak hem in hot water before mixing it with your ground bait, otherwise they tend to float away. Boil indian corn taken off the cob with hemp seed, and mix it with oil cake.
Some anglers even use hemp seed as hook bait, the hooks would of course be pretty tiny, with quite a few seeds on a hook.
Works good once the fish get the taste for them. Nice nutty taste

Hi Asif,
being a regular used of hemp seed for fishing, I will endeavour to give you the complete preparation, grondbaiting and using as hook bait.
I soak the hemp seed in water for 24 hours making sure that the seed is well covered to allow for saturation. Next morning, simmer the seed till they just split. The time taken is generally 2 hours.
For a days fishing I take 2 pints of the seed. The rest I freeze for the next trip. I fish 2-3 times a week.
Ground baiting. I use a catipult to fire the seed to the required distance.
Initially I will put in 2 cupfulls to start with. Once the fish find the seed, baiting can be continued with about 10-15 seed every 10 minutes or after every fish caught. For hookbait, select the seeds which have just started to split. Hook size must be no larger than 16 as the seeds are too small for hooks any larger. Push the bend of the hook into the split without bursting the seed. This method can only be fished on light tackle and not too vigorous a cast. I generally fish it 15 feet away. Any force used to cast and the bait will fly off. I will send a sample of hempseed with Fred Fernandes when he returns to India at the end of Aug. I hope this answers all your questions. Try it next time. Cheers, Henry

Henry, please check the legality of sending Hemp to India before actually doing so. I have a feeling it could lead to problems.

There's nothing particularly special about hemp. It's just easily available in the UK, cheap and effective.
The basic idea is to put down a bed of particle baits to get any feeding fish that pass through the swim to stop and start sifting through the silt or gravel on the bottom to find the tasty bit of cooked seeds. Meanwhile, you drop a bigger tastier bait in amongst them and catch a few.
There are lots of alternative "particle baits" on the market. They contain varying mixtures of hemp, millet and other small seeds that arnt to strongly flavoured or oily. A lot of folks simply use the cheapes bird seed they can find, cook it and pile it in.
Being cheap makes it ideal for prebaiting because if you're intending to fish with a bait like boilies or luncheon meat, you can put in a couple of handfulls of particle bait and a handfull of boilies or cubed meat every day for a week or so, without breaking the bank and when you turn up to fish, your quarry should have made a stop off at the baited area a regular part of their feeding cycle so you can start catchig straight away.

Not really Henry, just going a bit crazy.

I am not very sure but i think hemp seeds are avaliable in certain parts of WB. hemp is commercially grown in parts of Assam and WB for its fibre.

if you are looking for particle baits. I have tried bird seed in a few shallow lakes works well. I have also tried a combination of boiled JADA chawal which sinks and then use balls of maida on the hook. For top feeding fish popcorn...... sounds silly but works.
