hi guys,

here's something small from my part
went to this place yesterday morning

Image
preparing my ground-baits

Image
this is how the lake looks...

Image
landing with help of a local person...
a 16 LBs katla... :P

Image

the total catch would have cross 50 kgs
released all of them except these two...(sorry ken :( )
as i had to ride my bike home...
couldn't wait to weigh them, so went to local chicken/fish market
this is the final report...1> Katla: 16 LBs (8.1Kgs)-awesome run, took 45 minutes to land...
2> Mrigal: 15 LBs (7.8Kgs)-mindblowing, first took out 50 mts of line, then came back suddenly towards me, kept circling close by for 20 minutes, helluva fight...

Image
my friend (apurba) holding the Katla

Image
me holding the Mrigal...

Image
me with my sweet Katla...

regards
saiki

P.S. Bops sorry about the image sizes, as i'm using windows vista ultimate...image resizer toy for xp won't work for that :(
lemme buy some third party software....till then may i be excused?
** Bops already downloaded, installed and executed the edit...cheers

Great going mate. Excellent catch and beautiful fish.

Try and release all the next time. sorry to nag you like this but we, that is the PHG, took a few fish from the bath tub and now we hardly get any bites in there. Feel lousy when I see that happen coz I know it is my doing.

Stay with the program dude and you'll get them bigger,

Arrey Saida ( will have to call u that  ) Great goings !! Bloody fantastic fish....Remember, we need to make plans for this place next week..

Mken - Don't worry about the populace of the fish here. Its a private tank lcoated in a jute mill.. Nobody is allowed to fish here unless and until you have permission from the owners or some very influential people.. My dad fished here many many years ago and caught a lot of rohus in the range of 7-12kgs.. He only took one that was about 5kgs..

Sai - Really good that u released the smaller buggers back.. Need to keep some for me, mate... Get your behind back to Cal soon.. Am keeping next week open for Ludlow

Great going Saiki,

looks like I need to convert from salty to fresh water.

May sound crazy, but till date I have not eaten fresh water fish

Dad always told me that it aint tasty. used to believe him till one day he said that, when I was smaller I was too young to understand conservation & thats why he mentioned that.
Anyway, I'll stick to being a salty till I get back to Bom in Dec / Jan. Hopefully some of you guys can help me migrate.

Btw, where is Fred ? He was supposed to come to Dubai this month.

SB!!!

Great going matey!
Owen better not read about the 3 hooks

Mken- I think the fishing falls off because fish turn smarter after release. The silly ones end up in the pot and can't quite affect the others. Whatsay?

Cheers

Can be ... But unless u know how to play and land the fish, with only a hook in a mouth sio big that ur entire fist can go into, beginner's luck really wont cut it, mate !!

Catching a catla is many more times difficult than catching a rohu, mrigal, Khalbouse or any other carp...

Vedan,

I meant the fishing stopped cause we took out the fish and never put them back.

To come to your point. Yup the fish get smarter once they have felt a hook. But I seriously doubt they catch up with their friends and share the experience.

At Narora I once caught a big Mulley with a minnow tucked inside his mouth, much like a monkey does with peanuts, and another very old large hook with a hard callous around it. And then there was my big husky jerk plug. We let the mulley go after removing all the objects from his mouth. The minow was used as bait to catch another mulley. Life!

A 6lb mahseer has a gob you can stick your fist in. We bag 'em, and bigger, in running water, on single hooks if fishing with atta. But I got no worries if you're there to help me fight the terrible catla

Mken, I don't know about mulley, but I've seen an idiot hook a metre long mahseer on 6lb line (that's what the resort supplied) in a pet fish pool on the Ramganga. Obviously, the fish broke off. What was interesting was that a new hook was put on and the bait parked in the same pool. I was about 15' above the pool and could see everything clearly. Other fish tried to go for the bait, but the fish that got off would charge in everytime the other fish came around and literally drive them off. No more fish were caught for the next two days. Maybe it's just mahseer............

Cheers

V.

Mken - There is something suspicious about the fish in the Fort.. The rules here are that u can take a max of 2 fish on any angling day.. However the fish have to be over a certain minimum weight.
Mrigals - 750gms
Rest (incl. Rohus, catla, Khalbouse, Silver Carp ) - 1kg
Grass carp to be released immeidately

Now, the funny part here is that u will almost always catch a mrigal of 700 gms and not 750.. And u will catch the others that always are just below the kg mark..

Now, the crazy part here is that on Monday, the minimum weight needed goes upto 2 kgs, and I'll be damned if you dont catch a fish that is within 1.5kgs to 1.8kgs...
Its like these buggers know that they going to be released..

Them be smart...

Phish!!

You are the worst bong ever. I remember the last time you were ordering chili chicken at a dhabha.

Start catching them mate. Or your rod will go limp.

Hello Makarand,

We usually buy ants eggs from small tackle shops scattered all over cal
In remote places people manage to get them from trees
Red (i'd say orangeish) coloured ants build their homes with leaves (mostly of mangoe trees) in a somewhat round formation
Anglers from bengal swears by ants eggs only...they say no angling without that....

One more thing guys i'd like to add...i didn't use any sorts of liquor in any form....seems that turned out to be a good thing

regards
saiki

how do i know it was te same mulley? puncture wound and the grin on his face... :D :D

Eljefe - You lucky sod for catching a catla on a single hook.. If i were to Rank the hardest fighting fish in the lakes and ponds here in East, this is how I would rate them.. Taking into consideration, all the fish being a kg in weight..

5. Catla
4. Mrigal
3. Rohu
2. Nadim ( hybrid of a catla-rohu)
and
1. Khalbouse...

For me, the Khalbouse is a very strong fish. Difficult to hook up because of its small mouth and also the fact that it doesn't attack the bait like other fish, but instead nibbles away. So if u strike, most often than not, you will miss...

AA ( Angler Ali ) , Doc Sai, Ap double-O , Guru Owen ???

Hi Saiki / Asif

Nice catch.

Cheers,

Hi Gav,
Sometimes the rohu also makes a lot of problems when a newbe lands them with a thin line . They tend to jump a lot.

Hey Apoo - Rohus tend to jump almost always.. Beautiful sight :P :P But if you not careful, the hook will come free or the line might just snap..

Guys this sunday went to the same place again for some fishing again
Total gang comprised of....Gavin, Gavin's Dad (he fished in Ludlow 40 yrs back), Peter, Apurba, Shamim, Partha, Pratap (my uncle)...and of course myself

2 big rohu: 1 is about 7.5 kgs another is 6.65 kgs
1 mrigal: 4kgs (Gavin dutifully landed that fish  )
2 small rohus: about 1.5 kgs
plenty no of Batas, all around 100-150 gms (duly released by me 8) )

Gavin lost one khalbouse, Peter lost a big rohu of 5 kgs range

This rohu caught by my uncle Pratap....7.5 kgs
Image

I got my hands on this one after Gavin n Co left for home
Image

Gavin you should elaborate the story...
I'm booked for another invitational day of angling next sunday
That is 2nd of September....this time we should hit something elusive one

regards
saiki
