Hi Everyone,

Hit a nice location yesterday to do some fishing.
There were lots of guys fishing but didn't see anyone catch a think including me. It was a beautiful day on the beach :-)

Might have to come down to Chennai. Is this a good time to fish?

I am not sure how the situation is in Chennai right now as I am away from home for a while on an official trip. I beleive it should be good by August after the monsoon and things settle down.

I was targeting Striped Bass and Blue fish. The reel was an Abu 6500 C3 CT Mag Elite and is a perfect match on an 8' conventional surf rod IMHO.

Hi Bops, I am in a small town near Boston. Will be back home in a couple of months. Those GTs are not letting me sleep :(

Cheers,
Maruthu

Hi,

Maruthu,

Thats right. Its a queen fish.Get in touch when you are back in India. I have info about some terrific GT waters on the east coast near Vizag where you can latch on to some serious fish from the shore.

Thank you so much. Just bought a 4/0 Penn senator reel and is loaded with 50 lb mono for nailing those buggers from the rocks. It casts pretty well too :-)

Hi Fred,

The spot is on the right extreme corner of the Gangavaram Beach. The place juts out into the sea there. That and all along the coast south of that point. Check the Wikimapia and you will know what Iam talking about.

Thanks for the info Jeen. Is there any hotels to stay near that place?

Also, do you have any information (bait, rigs ...etc) on dead bait fishing for GTs. I now have two rods and was thinking to throw a big chunk of meat with my heavier rod while I am plugging (Popper fishing) for those buggers with the other rod.

BTW, I looked at that place (satellite images) in google Maps and it looks simply amazing.

Thanks again,
Maruthu

Hi Maruthu,

There are a few small hotels near the beach though I do not know the names. There is a star hotel there which I think is Ashoka.

Baited rod is a good idea . Use whole mullet about 8" or Mackerel. Use a two hook Rig Check link
http://www.marinews.com/Double-Hook-Rig-260.php

Put one hook through the eyes and the other behind the dorsal fin. Keep the leader to about 3' and use a 4 oz lead weight. The sinker can be tied on to the Swivel that connects the main line to the leader . Fish 30lb line and use a 70lb or above leader. The sinker is to be tied to the swivel usung 10 lb line.

Now you most probably get only one cast so choose your spot well. Once you cast ,the bait anchor your rod firmly . I said one cast because invariably the lead is going to snag among the rocks, and your only chance of getting your terminal back is with a fish on it, cause ,the Gt or other predator is going to grab your bait, snap the lead weight line which is snagged and make a run. Because the terrain is rocky and the fish strong you have to fish strong using a reasonably good drag till you get hit and once the fish is on ratchet up the drag and horse him to the shore.

Good luck

Jeen

Jeen, Thank you very much for the information.

I will be back home in 10 days :D and will have to plan a trip there soon.

I got a Penn 4/0 Senator (113H) reel loaded with about 300 yards of 50 lb mono main line (after being busted  ) to handle those beasts. Yes, that thing casts much better than I imagined

BTW, did you catch that queen fish on a Rebel Floating Minnow (Silver with Black back).
I heard that lure (Silver with Blue back) works magic with Barramundis from shore

Thanks,
Maruthu

I spoke to my colleague here and she is from Vizag and lives very close to that beach. She told me that there is some special permission required to enter that area and also mentioned that fishing was banned in that area some three years ago after some guys were killed by Jelly fish in that area.

She is also going to her home next week for a vacation and told that she will provide more information on access.
But however I would like to hear what is going on right now from guys here.

Thanks,
Maruthu
