I was in Hubli, last month to visit my in-laws place with my family. It was good to get away from the noise and pollution of Bangalore temporarily. Since it was my first visit, it took some time for me to get to know the fishing locations with the help of Deepak(my brother in law). In Hubli there is the Unkal lake, supposed to have big catfish. But I had no luck, with Crabs taking my bait everytime. Here are some photos of fishable waters around Hubli and in Mangalore.

Neelsagar Reservoir, around 28 km from Hubli.

Neelsagar from another approach. Apparently very few species of fish here.

Thats me with Haumeen(snakefish, that is what the locals call it), caught on worm.Supposed to taste good. Taken to the pot by my fishing partner.

Backwaters of Malaprabha river(Naviltheertha Dam), around one and half hours from Hubli. One of the better spots to fish.

Deepak(my Brother in-law) with his catch from the Malaprabha. Caught on Atta paste.Fish taken home.

Panambur Beach Jetty, Mangalore.

Catch from the Jetty with cut bait.Garfish(Right), can be very lively on Ultralight tackle.

looks like you had a great time. That is one hell of a lot of water to cover.

Wow that is an awesome place, Im sure you had a good time, that place looks great for some Rock Fish and GT's, next time try some poppers in the Mangalore area. My folks hail from Mangalore and I have fished there several times, I have caught a load of Red Snappers in the Udipi region.

The Mangalore photos are old photos , they were taken a few years back. The freshwater photos are the recent ones. I wish I could fish more Mahaseerken, folks are lucky who can walk or travel to their fishing spot in a few minutes, which is not possible in Bangalore.
Jetties are my favourite places to fish from Derek.Poppers should be great, otherwise bait fishing can be frustrating with rought ground. I have seen GT,Skates, Barramundi, Red Snapper, Grouper in very good sizes being caught from the Panambur Jetty.

the 'snake fish' is the spiny eel... also known as the baam up north... nocturnal buggers, they take dead bait very easily... late evening is the best time for them around rocks and crevices...

largest i ever saw being pulled ou by a buddy of mine weighed in a tad over 2.5 lbs...

the small ones do very well in aquariums!
