Aaron, I hope to post some pics of copper mahseer soon, they will be in the photo gallery, but they are not actually mahseer.
Your fish looks like a carnatic carp to me.

Copper mahseer look more like the pics of putitora that others have posted. Deep golden/bronze back, silver belly with a thick black stripe along the lateral line.

I remember Owen mentioning that the Deccan Mahseer is not the actual Cauvery Mahseer.

Yes Aaron, I agree it's probably a mahseer.

The Copper Mahseer, also called Katli, or Marrameen in Karnataka, looks like this:

Image

It is technically, a Neolissichirus wynaadensis. There are three types of Neolissichirus, wynaadensis being found, typically, in the Western Ghats region of Northern Kerala/Southern Karnataka. It is the only one of the three to have the black stripe along the lateral line.

There will be a picture of a slightly bigger one posted on my photography workshop post in 10 minutes.

Re: photography workshop, I was halfway through posting when the site appeared to crash. Lost everything I'd done to that point and have not had time to re-post.
I'll get it done on Friday.

Aaron! That looks like a deccan mahseer (Kudhree).
They seem to come in all colours these days.
For better identification we need to see the fins. The way you are holding the fish makes it difficult to be sure.
