Here are are a few photos from various trips to the Cauvery River between 2002 and 2006.

Image

This fish was a good seventy

Image

On one memorable day I cast off a big ball of ragi - it sailed across the river and landed smack bang on a crocodile's head. It jumped into the air and bolted into the river.

Image

This fish was caught in 2006 and weighed 47lb

Image

This superb fish was caught by Christine Merritt and weighed 82lb if my memory serves me correctly. I think it is probably one of the biggest mahseer ever caught by a woman. She played out the fish in the dark without assistance. A fantastic lady.

Image

This is my current desktop - if anybody wants a bigger image let me know.

Image

This 42lb fish was caught by Graham Chapman on the last day of our visit in 2006 about 2 miles below the camp. It took a crab fished amongst heavy rocks. The guide wouldn't swim because of a big croc. Graham had struggled during the visit and so his mate Mark risked the croc and took a rod across to free the line. The fish was landed 40 minutes later after multiple snag ups.

Image

Graham Chapman with a 25lb fish caught off the camp beach on ragi.

Image

My fishing mate Martin Smyth with a 37lb fish caught half mile below Croc Rocks.

Image

This amazing 98lb Golden Mahseer was caught on our 2002 trip by Paul below Croc Rocks. The fish was easily identified by having one bulbous eye. It nearly pulled Paul in on the take.

Image

A suberb looking silver which weight just over 40lb. Caught by Graham Wall.

You could be right. I must admit I'm not too clued up on the mahseer sub species. I know that this stretch mainly produces gold, silver and the occasional black mahseer. I assumed at the time that this was a silver but agree it is more silver blue metallic than other silvers caught. I didn't realise this at the time and it may just be the way the photo developed.

This smaller mahseer (below) held by Bola is indicative of the "silvers" we caught.

Thanks all - it is great to see the photos appreciated. My only regret is that it is other people holding all the really big fish! Fortunately I get as big a kick from other people catching and it has been a privilege to see such magnificent fish.

I'm returning in February 2008 and hope to try out some different tactics to see if it makes any difference. I'll risk making an idiot of myself by posting my thoughts on what I'm going to do shortly. Comments, ridicule and suggestions will be very welcome.

It is what is locally known as the kurrel. Good fighter but a real bony mother.

Hi Ecclerigg,
Nice pictures mate. Those big mussullah are becoming more and more rare these days. Any one catching one can count himself to be privelaged and blessed. The bluefin (deccan mahseer) are not a patch on the old lot when it comes to power and looks.
Regards
Owen

Cutting it very fine Fred. Very near the monsoons, and the fish will be moving upriver. However i did have a 25lb on the last day of May last year in stormy weather.
