Sailendra,

You are right the channa striata is also a murrel species. This is the common black/ olive/ brown top with sriped white bellied fish you find in the ponds and small water bodies.

Most fry of Murrel be it Channa Striata, channa Murrelius, Channa marulioides and the Toman have similar red or brown coloured frys and do take care of their young ones and protect them till they are about 3 to 4' before leaving them on their own. There is a picture of the Striata on our post " road kill"

Keyur, Thanks very much. It was a big one. Just plain lucky, I guess. I was on a line which had failed me earlier. I was petrified that this too was getting away.
