Hello Everyone,
I had recently gone to Cochin and stayed at a resort on the backwaters where I cought my first salt water fish (milk fish). It was a wonderful experience and the fish gave me a pretty good fight.I request you all to advice me on the bait for back water fishing as I now live very close to Calicut and I can explore the backwaters here.

Hi Aleem,

Well done buddy. You have one of the most difficult species to catch in your hands!! great result. Although not often targeted as its very hard to hook the milk fish is a great fish to catch as they put up a superb fight!

I hope my chance comes soon!

Try some different lures in the back waters for barra and various other species such as ox eye tarpon and thread fin salmon.

All the best, Scott

Hi ALEEM !
Great catch.
Its a good idea not to post pictures of your catch bleeding/slaughtered/cooked/curried or GRILLED.
Cheers !

The bait I used was wheat flour. This was recommended by the resort people as they have witnessed a lot of anglers trying this out and being sucsessful.I guess the fish there are used to this diet.I was surprised when I was adviced to use wheat flour as i always use this with other ingredients for fresf water fish(Rohu etc).

Thanks a lot Aleem for your quick reply. Very interesting to know that backwater fishes are crazy for Wheat Flour.

Regards,

Arun

This is standard resort bait, perfect for aquarium fishing... 99% of all resorts heavily ground bait the waters around them with kitchen scraps to keep their guests happy!!! Bread is another option...

We all know of one IA member who has caught mahseer using styrofoam cause bread kept falling off the hook!!!

heheheheeheeh Not Styrofoam. Part of the foam that I managed to tear away from the resort's pillow.

Match the hatch they say. And boy did it work. The gillie asked me for the rig at the end of the session.
