Remember the science lesson on banana tree leaves? Well Sting rays body behaves the same way... it splits from the sides when it puts up a rough fight.

Stingray are hell of a fighter, your hands starts aching trying to take them in. I have already lost one rod as it was not properly fixed on the stand. It takes the bait and goes off like a rocket. I used a 50 kg braided line which it breaks with ease some time.

It is a natural tendency of flat fish like Sting Ray and even fish like GT that have a lot of flat body surface area to use this surface area against the angler in a fight to maximize resistance and create maximum drag in water. So it is the strength of the fish when it runs with hydrodynamics in it's favour vs the drag it creates with minimal effort while you pump it allowing it to recover faster while you toil with/against the laws of hydrodynamics.
