Hi Ali,

What happens to most of the fish taken at Powai are they released or taken for the table?

Reason for my asking is that I see a lot of pictures of these fish taken indoors so I presume that they are consumed, but Powai water is not of the best quality for fish that are to be eaten. I have read reports of high mercury and led in fish.

Are anglers who fish there aware of this or has the water quality improved to acceptable levels ?

Bobby

Some years back, when a prominent builder started using Powai water for construction activities, the Powai almost dried out. At that time, many of these fishes, up to 45Kg. were found floating belly up and were removed from the lake.

The best news about Powai is that a Mahseer of 4kg was caught and subsequently released, from Powai last week. Looks like the efforts of all members is bearing some results.

Regards,

Ali.

Hi Bob,

Only fish spawning now are Giant Gorami, Olive Carp,Talapia, Gobi, Mangur & Singhi. Hopefully after the dredging of IIT corner, major carp may start spawning.

Regards,

Ali.

I did not see that fish but as per discription it was a golden Mahseer. These are introduced fishes. I do not think that mahseer breeds in still water. They can be stocked and thrive in still water lakes and the best example of this is Renuka lake near Nahan in Himanchal pradesh.

Regards,

Ali.

Should be mate but not to sure, the lake was pretty messed up by all the pollution and Talapia infestation a while ago. The boys at the MSAA have really worked their asses off to get it cleaned up.

No Murrels in Powai. It is strange but true considering that other lakes of Mumbai have recorded population of snake heads.

Ali.
