Anyone ever fished Ganga upstream of Rishikesh? Where can one get permits there (if any), and which would be a good spot to go without hurting any religious sentiments and getting beat up!

I heard a while ago that the UA govt. was giving out angling permits for the entire state... don't know if thats tru or not...

Any suggestions people?

Hi!

Well I'm certainly no expert, but I caught my one and only Mahseer from the Ganga at Byas Ghat. 17 pounds, so no giant, but one of our party lost one around the 40 mark, so they are there!

Good luck.

Ric

There is a forest dept office at munni ki retti (the left towards ananda after laxman jhula. you could also walk up from rihikesh.). Talk to them. we used to get permits to fish phool chatti and byaasi from there. say it is for angling not fishing. fishing means commercial to them. but make sure you get a permit. Some time ago a person from doon was arrested and had to spend the weekend in a jail. The worst part was he never got his gear back.

The Angling permit to fish Beas Ghat, can be got from Pauri, 46 Km from Devprayag. Its the only place I know of, it may also be possible to get it elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Been fishing upstream of Kaudyala last few years.

Big fish still in the Ganges though not as fiesty and tough as the Kali fish ...
Kali fish have balls !!!

Byasghat is good during the migration but its all about timing - the Nayar drops in less than 4-5 days and all the big bros have moved into the Ganges - the trick is to time it and be there on the confluence when the traffic is moving - thats the time to haul up in byasghat.

There are a few spots downriver below Kaudyala and Shivpuri where the rafting camps are - its a bit crowded for my personal scenery requirements but I know people who haul up here as well. The terrain is serious mahseer country but the rafting camps have pushed the fish out to quieter sections of the river.

It would make sense for guys coming from South to shack up at one of the rafting camps who will organize permits as well though they have useless gillies ... from here one can walk sections of the river and do your own thing.

Make sure you have right tackle for big rivers - its sad to loose a fish with a plug in its mouth due to poor tackle !
