First things first, I cannot really guide you on the Indian fishing scene as I am based in Australia.
Now that the anglers on this forum know of your position and interest, I am sure they will come forward to help you.
In terms of equipment, I understand that you can get it in Bangalore from the Indian Angler site and the forum moderator Mr. Bopanna will be able to help you in your choce of rod, reel etc.
For what it is worth, I have fished for mahseer at Bhakra Dam with a 6-10kilo rated rod, using a size 4000 reel with 30 lb. Braid line and I have used Rapala J-11 jointed plug in Firetiger colour, Rapala Tail Dancer and Australian Scorpion lure in green and gold colour.
You should be able to get the Rapala lures from Bangalore and I strongly recommend them.
I have not fished for rohu (I do not use bait) and catfish can be caught on Mepps spinners quite often.
I suggest you start slowly with good basic gear and then gradually diversify your equipment as you gain more knowledge and confidence.
In any case, welcome to the exciting world of angling!
