Post subject: | Fishing in Shillong |
Hi all, I am making a trip to Shillong and am planning a fishing trip to Dawki (Umngot) as i hear this is a great angler's paradise. As i am quite new to this area i would appreciate as much local information is possible. Request the other community members on here if they have any idea to help me out 1. What are the fishes one can look out for there 2. what does one use as bait 3. Is there a fishing licence required |

hi Bangler_Lad1984! Strange that no one replied you. anyway let me just share few things i know about that place. i lived in shilling for 1 and half year but never fished in dawki coz its quite far around 2 and half hrs drive with a good vehicle and the road is not pleasant. Dawki is a place where the river drains to Bangladesh. the area is not that tensed but hey you must not step the other side. the water is Crystal clear and low during late winter, turbid and high now. i saw local fisherman fishing with bread (saw them buying) and their secret ingredients on a boat and they catch quite a lot. as i was watching them from distance i dont know the species they are catching. make frens with some locals and am sure it will be fun. i am planning to fish in umiam lake (badapani) on 5-6th nov. and my target will be carps ![]() check google earth 25 deg 11'20.72''N & 92 deg 01'06.33''E |

Hey dbarma, Many thanks for you response, yep I do find it quite strange that no one replied as there seem to be many people from shillong on here. Well seems there has been a small change in our plans, we have now moved our location to Umiam lake as dawki is quite far and we dont have too much knowledge of the local fishing hotspots and so on. But umiam works well to as its an hours drive from the city (got a scorpio) Well will be on the banks of the umiam on 12, 13 and 14 of this month, am not a very experienced angler but am very eager to learn. Was just wondering if you are familiar with the lake and you know which are good spots to fish would be helpful if you could share, also what bait do you use as well as what rig and set up do you use have only had some experience with bottom feeders like catty's but they are no fun. Many thanks in advance for your help and happy to link up with you offline to learn more. Cheers! Andy |

Hi Bangler_Lad1984, Well then..your count down starts ![]() ![]() I use 1-4 size, medium shank, octopus hooks and ground bait them. usually i arrange 2 to 3 hooks. N.B: watch for the rocks, use a good leader and of course carry a light jacket. |
